FRINGE OTTOMAN COVER
Level: Intermediate
WHAT YOU'LL NEED
- Tube shape ottoman
- 1m of Luna suedette in blush with 145cm width
- Fringes with two different colours of your choice
- Sewing machine and matching thread
- Scissors, tape measure and pins
- Paper, pencil and ruler for pattern making
INSTRUCTIONS
Step 1 - Using the tape measure, record the measurements of your ottoman including the height, diameter if the top circle and circumference of the ottoman.
Step 2 - To create the pattern, use the measurements from step 1 to draw out a circle the size of your ottoman top. * Add a 1cm seam allowance around the circumference. For the side, draw a rectangle that has the length of your circumference measurement and the height of the ottoman as the width.
Step 3 - Cut 1 piece of each pattern out of your Luna suedette fabric.
Step 4 - Pin the fringe trim onto the rectangle piece of fabric at the height you wish it to hang. Sew in place using the sewing machine. Stop the trim 1cm before the edge of the pattern piece so your trim does not bulk up the seam allowance.
Note - You may need multiple packs of fringe depending on the size of the ottoman you are working with.
Step 5 - Repeat step 4 with the second layer of fringe trim. Overlap them by 1cm when joining so it looks like a continuous piece of trim.
Step 6 - Pin the two pattern pieces with right sides together, working around the circle pinning as you go. Ensure you are attaching the circle to the top side of the main ottoman piece. Roughly pin the side seam of the main piece together.
Step 7 - Once they are pinned together, place the pinned pieces over your ottoman (wrong side out) and adjust your pins accordingly to get the best fit.
Note - You may want to hand sew the pieces together while they are pinned on the ottoman, this will make it easier when sewing on the sewing machine in the next step.
Step 8 - Once you are happy with the fit of cover, it's time to sew it together. Following your pinned seam allowance, or your hand stitching, sew the pieces together, starting with the side seam and then the circular top seam.
Step 9 - Try the cover on your ottoman again and make adjustments if needed. Otherwise, take off the cover and using scissors snip into the top circular seam to allow the seam to sit neatly when turned through.
Step 10 - Place the cover on one more time to pin up the hem. Work around the ottoman to ensure it is all at the same length then use the sewing machine to sew in place.
Step 11 - To finish, place cover over the ottoman and enjoy!
