LIBRARY BAG
LEVEL: INTERMEDIATE
WHAT YOU'LL NEED:
- 40cm of 112cm wide of Back to school printed cotton- pencil border
- 50cm of 112cm wide of Back to school printed cotton - pencil all over print
- 40cm of Iron-on light fleece
- 15cm of white 25mm sew in hook & loop fastener tape
- Scissors, Pins, Tape measure/ruler
- Sewing machine & matching thread
- Iron
- Plate or stencil/shape with a 13cm diameter
Note - 1.5cm seam allowance is used unless specified.
INSTRUCTIONS
Outer Bag Body
Step 1 -Cut 2x pieces measuring 40cm wide by 32cm high from iron on fleece and from the pencil border fabric with the border running across the base of the pieces. Fuse the fleece to the back of the fabric pieces.
Step 2 - With right sides facing, sew the two fabric pieces together along the base and sides edges, leaving the top open. Trim fleece back along sewn seams to stitching. To square off the corners, open out the corners aligning the two seams through the middle. Mark across the corners to a length of 2cm 1cm on either side of the seams. Sew across marking and trim excess corner away. Turn bag right way out and press the top edges with the flap and handles up away from the body of the bag. Top stitch along the top edges of the bag.
Step 3 - Pin the other side of the hook & loop tape to the centre of the front of the bag 8.5cm down from the top edge. Sew in place through the outer and lining layer of the front of the bag. Press bag into shape.
Bag Lining
Step 4- Cut 2x pieces measuring 40cm wide by 32cm high from the all over pencil fabric.
With right sides facing, sew the two fabric pieces together along the base and sides edges, leaving a 15cm gap along the base edge and leaving the top open. Square off the base corners in the same method as the bag outer.
Front Flap
Step 5 - Cut 2x pieces measuring 18cm high by 39cm wide from all over pencil fabric and 1x piece of fleece to the same measurements.
Step 6 - Fuse the fleece to the wrong side of one of the fabric pieces. Using a plate/stencil with a 13cm diameter, round of the base two corners of the flap pieces by drawing a curve from the side edge to the base edge around the curved plate. Trim away excess fabric below the curves.
Step 7 - Sew one side of the hook & loop tape to the right side of the flap piece with no fleece, in the centre 2.5cm up from base edge.
Step 8 - With right side facing, sew the top flap pieces together leaving the top edges open. Trim fleece back to the stitching and clip corners. Turn flap right way out and press flat. Top stitch around all edges of the flap.
Handle
Step 9 -Cut a piece measuring 8cm high by 28cm long from the middle of the pencil border fabric. Cut a strip of iron on fleece measuring 3cm high by 28cm long. Press under 1cm along both of the long edges of the fabric strip. With wrong sides facing, press strip in half aligning the two long pressed edges.
Step 10 - Open fabric back up and place fleece strip inside aligning one edge of the fleece with the centre pressed edge and under one of the outer pressed edges. Fuse in place. Fold strip back closed and press. Pin and then sew together by top stitching the 5mm in from each side long edge. If desired, sew two or three more rows of stitching between the top stitching.
Piecing Together
Step 11 - With right side of the back of the outer bag facing up, pin the raw ends of the handle to the top edge of the back piece in the centre with a 15cm gap between the handle ends. Sew handle to fabric 1cm in from the top edge.
Step 12 With the hook & loop side of the front flap facing up, place the flap on top of the back of the bag body and handle in the centre aligning top raw edges. Sew flap in place across the top through all layers 1cm in from the top edge
With right sides facing, place the outer bag with handle and flap inside the lining fabric. Aligning the side seams pin top edges together. Sew lining to the outer bag through all layers. Trim away any excess fleece from this top seam back to the stitching. Turn bag right way out through the opening in the base of the lining. Sew the lining opening closed. Place lining inside the bag, and press bag along.
