How To Sew A Tote Bag FAQs

Is A Tote Bag Easy To Sew?

Yes, a tote bag is generally considered easy to sew, especially for beginners. It involves basic sewing techniques such as straight stitching, hemming and attaching handles. With clear instructions and the right tools, like a sewing machine and basic sewing supplies, crafting a tote bag can be a straightforward and fun project for sewers of all skill levels.

How Much Fabric Do I Need For A Tote Bag?

The amount of fabric needed for a tote bag depends on its size and desired dimensions. As a general guideline, for a standard tote bag approximately 15 to 20 inches wide and 15 to 18 inches tall, you'll need about 1 metre of fabric. Adjust accordingly for larger or smaller bags, and consider extra fabric for handles and any additional features you may want to add.

What Lining To Use On A Tote Bag?

For lining a tote bag, consider fabrics like cotton, polyester or canvas that complement the outer fabric in weight and durability. Cotton provides a soft, breathable option, while polyester offers a smooth and easy-to-clean surface. Canvas linings add extra sturdiness. Choose a lining fabric that enhances the overall look and functionality of your tote bag, ensuring it withstands daily use and complements your style.

How Long Does It Take To Sew A Tote Bag?

The time it takes to sew a tote bag varies based on your sewing experience, the complexity of the design and the chosen method (hand sewing vs. machine sewing). Generally, a simple tote bag can be completed in 1 to 2 hours for beginners with basic skills. More intricate designs or additional embellishments may require more time, possibly up to several hours or sessions.

How To Sew A Tote Bag - Step By Step Instructions

View the video below and see the step-by-step guide for comprehensive instructions on how to sew a tote bag. You'll be creating a beautiful tote bag in no time with Spotlight!

Step 1: Prepare Materials and Measure Fabric

Begin by preparing your materials and then measuring out the main body piece. You'll need an 84 cm x 42 cm piece for the main body of the tote bag and two pieces measuring 10 cm x 50 cm each for the straps. Ensure to include seam allowances in your measurements to accommodate sewing.

Step 2: Iron the Hems For a Clean Edge

With your main body piece laid out flat on an ironing board, fold and press a 2 cm hem on the short end of the main body piece. Use an iron to press the fold firmly in place and then pin the hem. This hemming creates a clean edge and reinforces the openings of your finished bag. Secure the hem by stitching it down using a sewing machine. Repeat this process on both short ends of the main body piece.

Step 3: Prepare the Straps of the Tote Bag

Now, focus on preparing the straps for your tote bag. Take each 10 cm x 50 cm piece and fold it in thirds along its length. Fold and press a 1cm hem along both straps, then trifold and align the edges. Press the folds with an iron to create crisp edges then pin in place. Next, sew along the length of the pinned edges using a double stitch for durability, then repeat for the other side. Attach these straps to the hemmed edges on the inside of the main body piece. Position them evenly apart and ensure they are securely anchored by sewing a top stitch along the edges of the handles.

Step 4: Pin the Main Body Pieces Together

Fold the main body piece in half, aligning the long edges with the right sides of the fabric facing each other. Secure the folded edges together by pinning them in place along both sides. This step ensures that when sewn, the bag will have a neat and sturdy seam along its sides. Sew a 1 cm seam allowance along each pinned side, ensuring to backstitch at the beginning and end to secure the seams.

Step 5: Create a Square Base and Sew the Tote Bag

To create a square base or gusset for your tote bag, begin by flattening out the bottom edges. Measure 5 cm inwards from each corner tip and mark this point with a pin through both layers of fabric. This marking helps in sewing a straight line across each corner to form a triangular shape. Sew along the marked line, ensuring your stitching extends to the 5cm point from the corner tip. This sewing technique reinforces the corners of the bag, creating depth and stability. Repeat this process on the opposite side of the bag to complete both corners to create a 10 cm gusset for your tote bag.

Step 6: Turn the Tote Bag Inside Out and Finish the Edges

With both corners sewn, carefully turn the tote bag inside out through the open top. Gently use your hands to push out the corners, ensuring they are neatly formed and aligned. Optionally, you can further secure the triangular shapes to the base of the bag by sewing them down from the inside. Alternatively, trim any excess fabric from the seams and finish the raw edges with an overlock or zigzag stitch to prevent fraying. This step adds a professional finish to your tote bag, ensuring it is durable and ready for use.

Your canvas tote bag is now complete and ready to carry your essentials with style and functionality. Whether for daily errands or special outings, this handmade tote bag showcases your creativity and sewing skills while offering practicality.
