ORIGAMI BAG
LEVEL: INTERMEDIATE
WHAT YOU'LL NEED:
- 50cm Fabric A - Jocelyn Proust Wood Pigeon, Indigo
- 50cm Fabric B - Jocelyn Proust Wood Pigeon, White
- 50cm Fabric C - Prima Homespun, Teal
- Matching Gutermann 100% cotton thread
- Rotary cutter, mat & quilters rulers
- Quilting pins, tape measure
- Scissors, seam ripper
- Sewing machine with 1/4" foot
1/4" (1cm) seam allowance used throughout unless otherwise indicated.
Read all instructions carefully before commencing the project.
INSTRUCTIONS
CUTTING
• From each of Fabrics A, B & C cut - 2 x 18” (46cm) squares.
• From Fabric A cut a 3½” x 5½” (9 x 14cm) strip for handle cover.
BAG
Step 1 - With right sides facing, pin one Fabric A square to one side of a Fabric C square. Sew together and press seam to one side. Pin and sew one Fabric B square to the opposite side of the Fabric C square.
Step 2 - Repeat step 1 to join remaining 3 squares together.
Step 3 - Pin steps 1 and 2 together with right sides facing. Sew around the rectangle, leaving a 3” (8cm) opening on one short end for turning through.
Step 4 - Press, clip corners and turn right side out. Push out the inside corners and press, pressing in seam allowance of opening. Topstitch around outside edge.
Step 5 - With the rectangle horizontal take bottom right corner 5 (see Diagram 1) and fold up diagonally to the opposite corner 3 (see Diagram 2). Pin at 3.
Step 6 - Take top left corner 1 (see Diagram 1) and fold down diagonally to the opposite corner 7 (see Diagram 3). Pin in at 7.
Step 7 - Take 3/5 and fold diagonally down to 1/7 and pin through all layers (see Diagram 4), points 5 and 7 are underneath 1 and 3.
Step 8 - Pin together points 1 and 3 then bring together the edge from 1/3 to 2 and pin.
Flip over to the other side and pin together points 5 and 7 then bring together the edge from 5/7 to 6 and pin. Sew together along both edges. Press.
Step 9 - To create corners lay bag flat and using your quilting ruler measure 2½” (6cm) from the corner point and rule a line across to form a triangle. Stitch across. Trim seam to ¼” (6mm), cutting off the point. Repeat for the other corner. Press well and turn bag right side out.
Step 10 - Take the 3½” x 5½” strip of fabric and turn short ends under ¼” and press.
Pin right sides together and sew down the long edge. Turn right side and press.
Slip it the tube over the end of one handle piece, pulling handle through as far as possible. Overlap the handles and stitch across then stich in a square on the ends. Press then slide cover over the join.
