Level: Beginner
What you'll need:
- 145 cm x 1.5 m Cotton Yarn Dye Picnic Gingham (Red)
- 150 cm x 1.5 m Plain Cotton Canvas
- 32 mm x 2.4 m Cotton Heading Tape (White)
- Gutermann Cotton Sewing thread
- Sewing machine
- Scissors, Pins, Iron, Tape measure/rule
Instructions
- Cut both fabrics into 145 cm squares.
- With the right side facing up, place plain canvas onto a large table or flat surface.
- Measure and mark the middle of one of the side edges of the plain canvas, then measure out 9 cm on either side of this mark, and mark with pins.
- Cut tape into four lengths: 2 x 45 cm & 2 x 75 cm.
- Place one of 45 cm lengths of tape at the one of the pins, aligning raw edges with the tape running into & over fabric. Pin in place.
- Pin one of the 75 cm lengths of tape on top of the pinned 45cm length, aligning all raw edges. Sew tape lengths to fabric 1 cm in from raw edge. Repeat with other tape lengths at the other marked pin edge of fabric.
- With right side facing down, place picnic gingham on top of canvas. Pin fabrics together along outer edges.
- Leaving a 30 cm gap in the middle of the side opposite the tape ties, sew fabrics together with a 1.5 cm seam allowance. Trim corners and turn blanket & ties right way out through gap. Press flat.
- To close opening, either hand sew or top stitch 5 mm in from outer edge.
- Finish blanket by top stitching 2 cm in from the outer pressed edges.
- If desired, finish tie ends by sewing a small double hem on the raw edges of tape lengths.
Storage Tip: To roll up, lay blanket flat with gingham side up and ties extending out past blanket at the top. Fold in each side of the blanket to meet in the middle. Repeat and bring sides in again to meet in the middle. Starting at the base (no ties' end), roll up blanket towards the ties. Once rolled up, wrap the longer tie around the rolled blanket and tie with shorter tie into a bow. Repeat on the other side of the blanket.
