TENSION

28 sts and 36 rows to 10cm over stocking st, using 3.25mm needles.

HAT

Using 3.25mm needles and C1, cast on 97 (117) sts.

Beg Rib - 1st row (RS) - K2, * P1, K1, rep from * to last st, K1.

2nd row - K1, * P1, K1, rep from * to end.

Rep 1st and 2nd rows until work measures 2.5cm from beg, ending with a 2nd row.

Break off C1.

Beg Patt - Do not weave colours in fairisle, but carry colour not in use loosely across on WS. Always carry colours to ends of rows. Always carry C2 above all other contrast colours.

** Using C2, work 4 rows stocking st.

5th row - K1C3, * K3C2, K1C3, rep from * to end.

6th row - P1C3, * P1C3, P1C2, P2C3, rep from * to end.

7th row - K1C2, * K3C3, K1C2, rep from * to end.

8th row - P1C2, * P1C2, P1C3, P2C2, rep from * to end.

Break off C3.

Using C2, work 4 rows stocking st.

Rep rows 5 to 8 incl once, using C4 in place of C3. Break off C4.

Using C2, work 4 rows stocking st.

Rep rows 5 to 8 incl once, using C5 in place of C3. Break off C5.

Using C2, work 4 rows stocking st.

Rep rows 5 to 8 incl once, using C6 in place of C3. Break off C6. **

Rep from ** to ** for patt until work measures approx 14 (15) cm from beg, ending with either a complete 4 rows of fair isle or 4 rows of stocking st, size 6/9 months only - dec 4 sts evenly across last row ... 97 (113) sts.

Using C2 for rem, Shape Crown - 1st row - K1, * sl 1, K2tog, psso, K9 (11), rep from * to end ... 81 (97) sts.

2nd and foll alt rows - Purl.

3rd row - K1, * sl 1, K2tog, psso, K7 (9), rep from * to end ... 65 (81) sts.

5th row - K1, * sl 1, K2tog, psso, K5 (7), rep from * to end ... 49 (65) sts.

Cond dec in this manner (working 2 less sts between dec each time) in alt rows until 17 sts rem.

Work 1 row.

Break off yarn, leaving a long end. Run end through rem sts, draw up tightly and fasten off securely.

FINISHING

DO NOT PRESS. Using mattress st, join side edges together to form centre back seam.

SOCKS (make 2, beg at sole)

Using 3.25mm needles and C1, cast on 37 (39) sts.

1st row (RS) - * inc in next st, K16 (17), inc in next st, rep from * once more, K1 ... 41 (43) sts.

2nd and foll alt rows - Knit.

3rd row - * inc in next st, K18 (19), inc in next st, rep from * once more, K1 ... 45 (47) sts.

5th row - * inc in next st, K20 (21), inc in next st, rep from * once more, K1 ... 49 (51) sts.

7th row - * inc in next st, K22 (23), inc in next st, rep from * once more, K1 ... 53 (55) sts.

9th row - * inc in next st, K24 (25), inc in next st, rep from * once more, K1 ... 57 (59) sts.

Knit 11 rows garter st.

21st row - K34 (35), K2tog, turn.

22nd row - K12, K2tog, turn.

Rep 22nd rows 18 times.

41st row - Knit to end ... 37 (39) sts.

42nd row - Knit, inc 8 (6) sts evenly across ... 45 sts.

Next row - Purl. Break off C1.

Beg Rib - Using C5 for rem, 1st row (RS) - K2, * P1, K1, rep from * to last st, K1.

2nd row - K1, * P1, K1, rep from * to end.

Rep 1st and 2nd rows until rib measures 2cm, ending with a 2nd row.

Cast off loosely.
