What Fabrics Should I Use To Make Bedding?
Many crafters do not only use our selection of fabrics to create their own garments or curtains, crafters also count on our selection of fabrics to create bedding. If you have never made your own bedding before, we urge you to check our handy guide to bedding fabrics.
When Should I Use Cotton To Make Bedding?
Cotton is one of the most popular materials for bedding. It has lot of beneficial properties that most crafters look for, this includes breathability, durability, and even easy maintenance. That being said, it is possible that you will encounter various types of cotton fabrics. To ensure you know the difference, there are some of the most notable options.
Egyptian cotton - If you are going for the most luxurious option out there, then Egyptian cotton is your prime choice. Of course, this option should only be used by experienced sewers, as this is an expensive and rare material.
Cotton jersey - This material is not woven, contrary to most fabrics you will use for bedding. Instead, cotton jersey is a knitted fabric that is known for its supreme softness, even if you are on a budget.
Flannel - Crafters will only use flannel when they need something soft and warm. In colder climates, flannel bedding is an absolute must, especially considering the superior warmth it provides. You can also get this fabric in quite unique patterns and designs, which makes your options as a crafter a lot more widespread.
When Should I Use Polyester To Make Bedding?
As fabrics can often be an investment, many crafters are looking for more budgeted options to create a variety of projects. This is often the case for bedding. Fortunately, they can look at a manmade material such as polyester to work with.
When working with pure polyester, you must remember that the weave of the material can determine its softness. For example, fine weaves such as microfibre polyester are extremely soft and can mimic cotton really well. On the flipside, pure polyester is a lot less breathable than cotton, so it can lead to excessive sweating when pure cotton is used in bedding.
If you are looking for a budget-friendly option with plenty of breathability, you can always choose a combination of polyester and cotton, or polyester mixed with another fabric fibre. Not only are these options more breathable, you can still benefit from the standard durability and stain-resistance polyester is associated with.
When Should I Choose Bamboo To Make Bedding?
Bamboo has increased in popularity in recent years, but this is a fabric that is often misunderstood. To make fabric from bamboo, the pulp must go through a special chemical process. Once the pulp has been dissolved and then solidified again, it can be spun into a yarn.
Even though it is not as known worldwide as cotton or polyester, bamboo fabrics do have benefits. They are soft and silky against the skin, and just as breathable as regular cotton fabrics. Bamboo fabrics also tend to be durable, which means your bedding will last longer.
Which Additional Fabrics Can Be Used For Bedding?
We already mentioned some of the popular choices for bedding, but there are many other fabrics that could be used for your bedding projects. Here are some of the most notable to consider:
Blended fabrics - As we mentioned earlier, blended fabrics enable you to get the best of two different fabrics. Some of the most common combinations include cotton and polyester, bamboo and cotton, and similar materials.
Acrylic fabrics - Fabrics made from synthetic acrylic may not be as comfortable as cotton, but they are a lot more resistant against wrinkles. For anyone who struggles with wrinkled bedding, this material can be an excellent solution.
Nylon fabrics - A nylon fabric is another synthetic material that provides incredible strength, durability, and wrinkle-resistance. Unfortunately, this material is quite susceptible to pilling, so it is recommended to choose a nylon blend if you do want to use this material in bedding.
Silk fabrics - If you love superior softness and luxury, you cannot say no to silk fabrics. In addition to being extremely soft and silky, they are also hypoallergenic, this means this fabric is extremely suitable for those with certain allergies.
