Can I purchase nets and tulles at Spotlight?

Yes, you can. AS you will see from our range, nets and tulles span a wide range of uses, from basic net that can be used to cover foods or keep out biting insects, to beautiful tulle for evening wear, bridal outfits or costumes. Here at Spotlight, we stock a large number of nets and tulles in plain, patterned, metallic and sparkly effects, for a huge number of sewing and craft projects. All are available by the metre, so you can buy as much or as little as you need.

What is tulle fabric?

Tulle is a fine mesh fabric, often used to make wedding veils and embellish evening wear or wedding gowns. Tulle can be made from either natural or synthetic fibres, including silk, nylon, rayon, or cotton. Use our gorgeous tulles under or over other fabrics for vintage skirts, petticoats, veils, angel costumes, ballet tutus and more, or to make window treatments, floral arrangements or even to decorate hats. If you can't find tulle in exactly the colour you are looking for, it can also be dyed.

Can I substitute tulle for chiffon or organza?

All three of these fabrics are delicate and gauzy, making them an excellent choice for delicate embellishments as well as wedding gowns and evening wear. Chiffon can be made from silk or from manmade fibres. It has a very fine weave, and is lightweight and sheer. Organza is also usually made from silk, but is much stiffer than chiffon. It wrinkles easily and creates more volume in a dress. Tulle can also be made from silk, manmade or mixed yarns, but it resembles a very fine net. It is stiffer than chiffon, and looser than organza.

What are the uses of nylon netting?

Netting has a wide variety of uses due to the fact that it is sturdy and at the same time flexible and compact. Think of fishing, where it is sturdy enough to carry a large amount of weight as big batches of fish are hauled out of the water. It can also be used for much more delicate processes such as being used under plaster casts to stop the plaster from adhering to your skin.

Net is also commonly used in camping tents, as insect screens, or to protect fruit and vegetables from animals or birds. Air can easily pass through the holes, which allows breathability, and it doesn't trap bacteria or moisture. Netting is also often used for luggage items to create bags that allow people to store items. Mesh is often a smaller, finer type of netting, and both allow air to pass through easily, and share a lot of the same uses. Nylon and polyester net are useful in areas that may get damp or wet as the material does not rot easily.
