INSTRUCTIONS

Step 1 - Cut from your variety of fabrics 30 - 8 x 10-inch blocks. From the left-over fabric iron on the vlisofix so that it will cover the fabric where you will be cutting out the shapes of the trees. You can make your own shapes of the trees or you can choose from the 3 supplied with this pattern, they can be skinnier and taller, fatter and shorter, whatever you would like. Once cut set aside.

Step 2 - From your scraps of fabric and with the vlisofix ironed to the back cut out a variety of trunk stems for your trees. The height of the stems will all need to be 2.5 inches high and can vary in thickness of the stem from 1 - 2 inches in width. Once cut set aside.

Assembling the block

Step 3 - Match up a tree and a trunk together with the fabric that you would like this to contrast with until you have all of your Christmas blocks sorted out.

Step 4 - One by One make sure to iron your tree trunk on first to the bottom of the block, making sure it sitting right on the bottom edge of the fabric.

Step 5 - Once the trunk has been ironed on, make sure to place the tree ¼ of an inch over the top of the tree trunk, so that it sits neatly on top and gives a need assembly to the bottom of the tree iron on and set aside.

Step 6 - Once all of your blocks have been assembled, lay them out on the floor, table or design board in the order that you would like them to appear in the quilt. Sew each row together first (6 trees in a row) and then row by row sew the quilt top together until all 5 rows have been sewn together.

Sandwich and Quilt Tip - with your left-over fabric you may choose to make a scappy binding for your Christmas tree quilt.

Fully pieced Christmas Quilt

Step 7 - Cut 30 - 10x 14-inch blocks from the variety of fabric. From each of these blocks cut an extra 2.5 from the bottom of each strip and set aside for tree trunk. This will leave you with a 10x11.5-inch block to work with to make the tree blocks. With this method you will be cutting from larger blocks of fabric and then trimming them to size once the block is assembled. This will result in scraps of Christmas fabric that could be used in a variety of Christmas decorations, stocking and Christmas present tags and decorations for under the tree, let your imagination run wild.

Tip: Work on two blocks at a time.

Step 8 - Draw a template. You can freely cut the angles of your tree with your ruler. Make it a bit more interesting with the trees being a variety of different shapes and sizes. Suggested size to work with is approximately 11 x 10 inches.

Step 9 - Lay two contrasting 11.5 x10 inch blocks on top of each other right sides facing up. Cut your left angle for the tree and then cut your right angle. Take the tree shape from the middle of the block and match it with the contrasting outer fabric. Sew 1 side at a time with your quarter inch foot.

Step 10 - Once assembled you can trim the block size down to 7.5 x 7.5 and set aside until all complete.

Step 11 - Continue to work in pairs until you have pieced your 30 various trees together.
