ORGANIC COTTON LEAF PLAY MAT

LEVEL: INTERMEDIATE
WHAT YOU'LL NEED:
- 'Quilter's' Organic cotton fabrics
- Backing fabric
- Cotton wadding
MEASUREMENTS
Finished Size (approx) cm: 76.5 wide x 126.3 long
INSTRUCTIONS
Step 1 - Enlarge leaf pattern to desired size (Diagram 1). Label all segments, then cut along all lines.
Step 2 - Cut out the fabric for each leaf segment allowing 1/4" seam allowance on all sides. Working from lightest to darkest: Fabric 1 - L1 and R1, Fabric 2 - L2 and R2, etc. (Diagram 2)
Step 3 - Sew all "L" segments together in order to create the left-hand side of leaf. Clip all curves and press seams towards the stem. Do the same for the right-hand side.
Step 4 - Place the right-hand side of the leaf on top of the left-hand side with the right sides of the fabric together. Pin along the edge that is the centre of the leaf, making sure that all the segments meet. Sew, clip curves and press.
Step 5 - Lay wadding on table, smooth backing on top of wadding and centre leaf patchwork on top of backing wrong side up. Pin all pieces together, then sew all around the edge of the leaf, leaving a 20cm gap in one of the sides for turning.
Step 6 - Trim excess wadding and backing from around edge of leaf patchwork. Clip curves and leaf stalk. Turn right side out, tuck in fabric at opening and press.
Step 7 - Top stich around the edge of leaf and ditch stich all leaf contours (Diagram 3).
