Cutting

From White tone on tone:

Cut 4 strips at 2 1/2" for inner border lengthways

Cut 2 at 40 1/2" and 2 at 44 1/2" (set aside)

Cut 4 strips at 5" then cut 26 x 5" squares

Using these squares cut diagonally across once to form half square triangles

From the Check fabric:

Cut 3 strips at 5" and then cut 24 x 5" squares.

Cut into half square triangles as in the previous step of the white tone on tone.

From the following 4 prints cut the following 6 1/4" squares

  • Main dark print = 7 squares
  • Second dark print = 6 squares
  • Light print A = 6 squares
  • Light print B = 6 squares

Outer border

Using the scenic route afternoon tea cut 6 strips of 4 1/2" set aside

Method

  1. Fold the 6 1/4" squares in half and press using the roller press or finger press to create lines forming 4 small squares in fabric. These are reference points
  2. Take one of the triangles and sew to one side of the square, matching the point on the triangle to the crease in the fabric on the square using a 1/4" seam allowance. Do this with each square
  3. Sew a triangle on the opposite side like the first side. Then press both triangles with seams towards the outer edge.
  4. Trim the dog ears off the sides
  5. Sew a triangle on each side of squares as in the previous step. Press after both triangles are sewn on forming the quilt block (square in square)
  6. Trim the block to 8 1/2". To square the block, ensure the ruler is squared to the points in the block.
  7. Layout your blocks as per diagram.
  8. Sew the blocks together to form rows.
  9. Sew the rows together to form the quilt top.
  10. Using the white tone on tone strips that were placed aside join 2 x 40 1/2" strips on opposite sides of the quilt top. Press strips outwards.
  11. Using the 44 1/2" strips attach to other 2 sides of quilt.
  12. Using the outer border fabric Join strips on the diagonal so you attain 2 x 44 1/2" strips and attach theses to the same side as the first tone on tone strips were added. Press outwards.
  13. Using the remainder of the border fabric strips join diagonally to form 2 x 52 1/2" strips. Attach to remaining sides and press outwards.
  14. Press quilt top.
  15. Baste quilt Top to wadding and backing with pins or with spray baste
  16. Using walking foot or Free motion quilting foot quilt as desired
  17. Binding:
    • From left over fabric from the quilt backing. Cut your binding at 2 1/4". Join your binding strips to create a length of 215" Then press in half. Attach the binding to the back of the quilt.
    • Bring around to the front and press. Using the binding clips to hold in place. Sew the binding down on the front using a decorative stitch. A herringbone stitch was used to do this on this quilt.
