Instructions
Reference the downloadable project sheet for project pattern diagrams.
Step One - Remove plastic and frame from canvas. Using the pencil draw organic wavey lines onto the canvas to plan where the black texture areas will be.
Practicing on small pieces of paper first may be helpful if you are not confident in the design. Use the example as inspiration or create your own unique pattern.
Step Two - Empty a full tub of Jo Sonja Texture Paste using a palette knife onto the flat tear away palette. Squeeze a large quantity of Jo Sonja Carbon Black on top of the texture paste. Using the size 5 palette knife mix thoroughly. If the colour is too light add more black paint, if the consistency is too thin add more texture paste.
Step Three - Apply the textured black paint mix to the canvas covering the pencil lines. Have the shapes wider towards the lower left corner and thinner towards the top right corner. Be sure to keep the paint at least 2 to 3 mm thick, re-mix more paint/texture paste is needed.
Once all the lines are covered with the sculpted texture paint allow to dry for 12 to 24 hours
When sculpting the textured paint follow these steps:
- Place large quantity (enough to completely cover the back of the palette knife) using the back face of the knife light pressure first then slowly swipe with a heavy pressure.
- Flatten the top of the textured paint holding the palette knife parallel to the surface of the canvas.
- Cut in to tidy the edges by dragging the knife against the canvas at a right angle. The tip of the palette knife cut into the thick paint to "clean" up lumps and bumps to for a crisp edge.
Step Four - With the now-dry black textured layer complete it's now time to apply the blended metallic layer. The gradation of colours is Steel Blue, Aztec Gold to Pearl White, image a diagonal blend weaving behind the black textured layer.
- When applying the metallic cut in the edges first with the tip of the size 2 angle brush, then use the larger size 12 filbert brush to fill in the larger space.
- Continue to fill the shapes with Jo Sonja Premium Metallic Steel Blue until diagonally half the canvas is covered.
- Then apply a band of Aztec Gold to the border of the Steel Blue.
- Using a dry brush, buff/blend the Aztec Gold into the Steel Blue following the same invisible diagonal line between panels.
- Repeat this application for the Pearl White, until there is a beautiful even blend of the three metallic colour between the textured black shapes.
Step Five - The final step is to clean up the side edges of the black textured areas and apply Jo Sonja Lustrous Gold accents to the edges.
- Start by placing the canvas upright and carefully cutting in the edges with Jo Sonja Carbon Black. The raised textured areas should be completely black.
Once the black paint has dried apply a thin outline of gold to the sides of the raised black textured shapes. The gold needs to thin and applied on a low angle to catch only the edge of the black area not the top face. Once completed set aside to dry.
Step Six - While the painting is drying, paint the frame with Jo Sonja Carbon Black. As Jo Sonja acrylic has superior adhesion to wood no primer is necessary.
Once the frame and painting are dry, attach the frame using a drill and hang. Enjoying your completed artwork!
