Stitch & Abbreviations
ssk (slip, slip, knit): Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle, insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and knit them together - 1 st decreased.
yo (yarn over)
An increase that also creates a small decorative hole (eyelet) in the fabric, worked as follows:
- Bring yarn to front, between the needles.
- Take yarn to back, over the right needle. This creates the new st. You are now ready to proceed with the next st as instructed
beg = begin(ning)
k = knit
k2tog = knit 2 sts together
rep = repeat
rnd(s) = round(s)
RS = right side
st(s) = stitch(es)
St st = Stockinette stitch
WS = wrong side
Note:
- Backpack is worked in St st worked in rnds (k every rnd), from the top downwards.
- Straps are worked separately.
- Lettering is embroidered onto finished Backpack using duplicate stitch.
Backpack
With circular needle and A, cast on 100 sts. Place marker for beg of rnd. Join by working the first st on left
hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle and being careful not to twist sts.
Work in St st worked in rnds (k every rnd) until piece measures about 1 1/4 in. (3 cm) from beg.
Next Rnd (Eyelet Rnd): (K2tog, yo, k46, yo, ssk) twice.
Work in St st worked in rnds until piece measures about 12 in. (30.5 cm) from beg.
Bind off, leaving a long tail for sewing.
Drawstring Straps (Make 2)
With 2 double pointed needles and B, cast on 3 sts. Knit the 3 sts. Do not turn work. Slide sts to other end
of needle and knit them, pulling yarn tightly across the back of the work, (do not turn work), rep from until
Drawstring Strap measures about 63 in. (160 cm) long.
Bind off.
Finishing
Top Casing
From RS, fold 1 in. (2.5 cm) of cast-on edge down inside the Backpack and sew in place to form casing (a
tube along top of Backpack) for Straps.
Duplicate St Lettering
Lay piece on a flat surface so that a pair of eyelets is at each top corner.
With B, duplicate stitch "BE BRAVE" following Chart, over the front 50 sts, beginning about 18-20 rows
above lower edge.
Take care to work through the top/front layer of the Backpack only!
Here's how to duplicate st:
- Thread blunt needle with a 24 in. (61 cm) length of B.
- Find the first stitch you would like to embroider. You'll see that the sts look like V's.
- Bring your threaded needle through the fabric of the Backpack, from WS out to RS at the point of the V.
- Now slide the needle under the stitch ABOVE the one you're duplicating.
- Now insert the needle from RS to WS at the same point you began.
- You will have made a V in indicated yarn colour over the V in yarn colour A!
Continue in this same way to embroider all the sts on the chart.
- When you're finished, bring the yarn through to WS and knot.
Attach Straps
Attach a safety pin to one end of one Strap. From RS, beg in right front eyelet, use the safety pin to draw the end of the Strap through the front casing, ending in left front eyelet. Leave the end to hang down left side of Backpack. Rep to draw the other end of the Strap through the back casing, beg in right back eyelet and ending in left back eyelet. Pin ends of Strap to lower left corner of back of Backpack
Beg in left eyelets and ending in right eyelets, rep to draw the second Strap through the casing so that ends hang down on right side of Backpack. Pin ends of second Strap to lower right corner of back of Backpack.
Seam Bottom of Backpack
From WS, sew bound off edges of Backpack together, sewing over ends of Straps at each corner. This closes the bottom of the Backpack and secures the Straps.
