KIDS NOVELTY BOLSTER CUSHION

Level: Intermediate
What you'll need:
- Fabric:
- 50cm of fabric for main body of pencil
- Plain coloured fabric for tip of pencil
- Plain cream fabric
- Plain grey fabric
- Pink fabric for eraser end
- Scissors
- Sewing machine
- Thread
- Hand sewing needle
- Pins
- Bolster Foam Cushion
- Hobby Fill
Instructions
Please read all instructions before commencing. 1.5cm seam allowance included. Reference the downloadable project sheet for project pattern diagrams.
Step 1 - For the main body of the cushion cut a rectangle measuring 45cm x 50cm.
Eraser end
Step 2 - Cut from grey fabric a 11 x 50 cm rectangle.
For the eraser end, cut a 13 x 50 cm rectangle and a circle with a 17.5 cm circumference.
Tip end
Step 3 - From pattern pieces cut from cream fabric 1 tip end.
From plain coloured fabric cut pencil tip.
Step 4 - Place the pencil tip onto the tip end and sew close to the curved edge of the tip piece.
Step 5 - Pin the straight sides of the pencil tip end together and sew using a 1.5 cm seam allowance.
Step 6 - Sew the pink eraser piece to the grey eraser piece.
Step 7 - Fold the circle end of eraser in half and mark with a small snip. Fold in half again and repeat. Fold the eraser end in half and again mark, repeat. Now match snips and pin circle end to the eraser end. Snip around curves to ease.
Step 8 - Pin, right sides together, the fabric for the main body of the pencil and sew, leaving a 20cm opening in the centre (this is how you'll insert the bolster cushion at the end.) Back stitch at beginning and end of seams.
Step 10 - Pin eraser end to main fabric matching seams. Sew together.
Step 11 - Fill the pencil tip end with hobby fill make sure it goes right into the very tip of pencil.
Step 12 - Carefully push foam bolster into the opening in pencil pillow making sure ends are right up into ends.
Step 14 - Pin and hand stitch opening closed.
