Elastic FAQs

What are the different types of elastic?

When it comes to the construction of the elastic, there are 4 main kinds: knitted elastic, braided elastic, woven elastic and non-roll elastic. Each has different advantages, so select accordingly to your project's requirements.

  • Knit elastic: Great for lightweight fabrics, or for clothing that requires a full range of motion - such as underwear or sportswear. Soft, comfortable, stretches well.
  • Braided elastic: Features excellent stretch and can be sewn directly into your chosen fabric. Ideal for waistbands and sleeve cuffs, or when a more heavy-duty finish is required.
  • Woven Elastic: Identifiable by its horizontal ribs that run the length of the elastic, woven elastic narrows when stretched and can weaken when sewn through. Best suited to use on light to mid-weight fabrics, stitched into a casing.
  • Non-Roll Elastic: Excellent stretch and recovery, maintaining shape even after repeated wash and wear. Eliminates the rolling and twisting of cuffs, for a more comfortable and refined finish to your garments.

What is elastic made of?

Sewing elastic can be made from a range of different fibres, the combinations of which affect the end use and performance of the elastic. The "stretchy" part of sewing elastic is typically rubber (latex) or synthetic spandex fibres. The stretching component is then covered with polyester, nylon, cotton or other fibres so it can be sewn into textiles and clothing.

How to sew elastic?

There are many different methods for sewing elastic into your garments - for example, elastic can be encased within a waistband or sewn directly into your material. If you're sewing elastic by machine, choose a stretch machine needle for the best results. Many sewing patterns will indicate the recommended type of elastic and correct sewing method for your project.
