Using a set of 4.00mm needles and MC, cast on 104 (112) sts.
Working in stocking st, every round knit, cont until work measures 14 (16) cm from beg.
SHAPE TOP
1st Round - * K11 (12), K2tog, rep from * to end 96 (104) sts.Knit 3 rounds.
5th round - * K10 (11), K2tog, rep from * to end 88 (96) sts. Knit 3 rounds.
9th round - * K9 (10), K2tog, rep from * to end 80 (88) sts.Knit 3 rounds.
13th round - * K8 (9), K2tog, rep from * to end 72 (80) sts. Knit 2 rounds.
16th round - * K7 (8), K2tog, rep from * to end 64 (72) sts. Knit 2 rounds.
19th round - * K6 (7), K2tog, rep from * to end 56 (64) sts.Knit 2 rounds.
22nd round -* K5 (6), K2tog, rep from * to end 48 (56) sts. Knit 2 rounds.
25th round -* K4 (5), K2tog, rep from * to end 40 (48) sts. Knit 2 rounds.
28th round - * K3 (4), K2tog, rep from * to end 32 (40) sts. Knit 2 rounds.
31st round - * K2 (3), K2tog, rep from *to end 24 (32) sts. Knit 2 rounds.
34th round - * K1 (2), K2tog, rep from * to end 16 (24) sts. Knit 2 rounds.
37th round - * K0 (1), K2tog, rep from * to end 8 (16) sts. Knit 2 rounds.
40th round - * K2tog, rep from * to end 4 (8) sts. Size 6-8 years only.
Next round - * K2tog, rep from * to end 4 sts.
Both Sizes
Work 8 rounds.
Break off yarn, thread end through rem 4 sts, draw up and fasten off securely.
MOON (make 2)
Using 3.75mm needles and C1, cast of 2 sts.
1st row - (RS) Knit.
2nd row - Inc in first st, inc in last st 4 sts.
3rd row - Cast on 2 sts, K3, inc in last st 7 sts.
4th row - P2tog, P4, inc in last st 7 sts.
5th row - Cast on 2 sts, K7, K2tog 8 sts.
6th row - P2tog, P5, inc in last st 8 sts.
7th row - Cast on 2 sts, K8, K2tog 9 sts.
8th row - P2tog, P6, inc in last st 9 sts.
9th row - Cast on 2 sts, K9, K2tog 10 sts.
10th row - P2tog, purl to end 9 sts.
11th row - Inc in first st, K6, K2tog 9 sts.
12th row - Purl to end 9 sts.
13th row - Inc in first st, K6, K2tog 9 sts.
14th row - Purl to end 9 sts.
15th row - Inc in first st, knit to end 10 sts.
16th row - Purl to end 10 sts.
17th row - Inc in first st, K7, K2tog 10 sts.
Work 3 rows stocking st.
21st row - K2tog, knit to last st, inc in last st 10 sts.
22nd row - Purl to end 10 sts.

25th row - K2tog, knit to last st, inc in last st 9 sts.
26th row - Inc in first st, purl to last 2 sts, P2tog 9 sts.
Rep 25th and 26th rows twice 9 sts.
31st row - Cast off 2 sts, knit to last st, inc in last st 8 sts.
32nd row - Inc in first st, purl to last 2 sts, P2tog 8 sts.
33rd row - Cast off 2 sts, knit to last st, inc in last st 7 sts.
34th row - P2tog, P3, P2tog 5 sts.
35th row - K2tog, K1, K2tog 3 sts.
36th row - Purl to end 3 sts.
Cast off, leaving enough thread for attaching to the top of the hat.
TO MAKE UP
DO NOT PRESS. Using Stem Stitch embroider stars at random on hat as pictured. Attach moon to top of hat as pictured. Sew in all ends. Roll brim of hat to wrong side.
