SOFT & HAZY BEANIE & SCARF
Level: Intermediate
What You'll Need:
- 4 Seasons Soft and Hazy 50g x 2 balls for Beanie and x 4 balls for Scarf.
- 1 pair each of 5mm and 5.50mm knitting needles for Beanie
- 5.50mm knitting needles x 1 pair for Scarf or sizes required to give correct tension.
- A small pom pom maker for Beanie
- A large crochet hook for fringe on Scarf
- Scissors
- Yarn needle
- Tape measure
Beanie
To Fit Head (approx): 59cm
Scarf
Width (approx): 18.5cm
Length excluding Fringe: 180cm
INSTRUCTIONS
Tension
16 sts x 26 rows to 10cm over patt, using 5.50mm needles.
To work a 16cm x 15cm tension square, using 5mm needles cast on 26 sts.
Work 40 rows patt as for Beanie. Cast off.
If you have more sts to 10cm, use a larger size needle, if you have less sts to 10cm, use a smaller size needle.
Beanie
Using 5mm needles, cast on 85 sts.
Beg Brim -
1st row (RS) - K2, P1, K1, rep from to last st, K1.
2nd row - K1, P1, K1, rep from to end.
Last 2 rows form rib.
Cont in rib until work measures 4cm from beg, ending with a 2nd row and inc one st in centre of last row ... 86 sts.
Change to 5.50mm needles.
Beg Patt -
1st row (RS) - Knit.
2nd row - Purl.
3rd row - P2, K2, P2, rep from to end.
4th row - K2, P2, K2, rep from to end.
5th row - Knit.
6th row - Purl.
7th row - K2, P2, K2, rep from to end.
8th row - P2, K2, P2, rep from to end.
Rows 1 to 8 incl form patt.
Cont in patt until work measures approx 18cm from beg, ending with an 8th row.
Shape Crown -
1st row (RS) - K2tog, K2, K2tog, rep from to end ... 64 sts.
2nd row - Purl.
3rd row - K1, P2, K2, rep from to last 3 sts, P2, K1.
4th row - P1, K2, P2, rep from to last 3 sts, K2, P1.
5th row - K1, K2tog, K2, K2tog, rep from to last st, K1 ... 48 sts.
6th row - Purl.
7th row - P1, K2, P2, K2, rep from to last st, P1.
8th row - K1, P2, K2, P2, rep from to last st, K1.
9th row - K1, K2tog, K2, K2tog, rep from to last st, K1 ... 36 sts.
10th row - Purl.
11th row - P2, K2, rep from to end.
12th row - P2, K2, rep from to end.
13th row - K2tog, rep from to end ... 18 sts.
Break off yarn leaving a long end.
Thread end through rem sts, draw up tightly and fasten off securely.
Finishing
DO NOT PRESS. Using mattress st and long end of yarn left at crown, join side edge tog to form centre back seam.
Scarf
Using 5.50mm needles, cast on 30 sts.
Note - When joining in a new ball of yarn, join yarn in 3rd stitch from either side edge on WS to avoid unsightly knots on side edges of work.
Knit 3 rows garter st, (1st row is WS).
Beg Patt -
1st row (RS) - Knit.
2nd row - K2, purl to last 2 sts, K2.
3rd row - K2, K2, P2, rep from to last 4 sts, K4.
4th row - K2, P2, K2, rep from to end.
5th row - Knit.
6th row - K2, purl to last 2 sts, K2.
7th row - K2, P2, K2, rep from to end.
8th row - K2, K2, P2, rep from to last 4 sts, K4.
Rows 1 to 8 incl form patt.
Cont in patt until work measures 179cm approx from beg, ending with a 2nd or 8th patt row.
Knit 3 rows garter st.
Cast off loosely on WS.
Finishing
DO NOT PRESS. Wind yarn around a piece of cardboard 10cm wide and cut along one edge, Using 2 strands of yarn, fringe evenly along cast on and cast off edges of Scarf. Trim fringe if desired.
