SPECIAL ABBREVIATION
Spike3 = Insert hook in next st 2 rows below, yoh, draw through a loop to the height of work, yoh, draw through 2 loops on hook, (insert hook in same st 2 rows below, yoh, draw through a loop to the height of work, yoh, draw through 2 loops on hook) twice ... 3 spikes in same st 2 rows below.

Width (approx finished): 28cm
Length (approx excluding tassels): 22cm
Tension: Correct tension is not essential for this project.
Using 4.50mm hook and C1, make 40ch.
1st row (RS), 1dc in 2nd ch from hook, 1dc in each ch to end, turn. ... 39 dc.
2nd row - 1ch (does not count as a st here or throughout), 1dc in each dc to end, turn.
3rd row - 1ch, 1dc in each of next 18dc, 2dc in each of next 3dc, 1dc in each of last 18dc, turn ... 42dc.
4th row - As 2nd row.
5th row - 1ch, 1dc in each of next 18dc, 2dc in each of next 6dc, 1dc in each of last 18dc, turn ... 48dc.
Break off C1.
Using C2, 6th row - 1ch, miss next dc, spike3 in next st 2 rows below, miss next dc, 1dc in next dc, rep from to end, turn.

FINISHING
DO NOT PRESS, but block to shape if desired by dampening rainbow on WS, moulding to shape as pictured and laying flat on towels to dry. Sew in ends towards centre of work. Wind each colour around a piece of cardboard 20cm long and cut along one edge. Using crochet hook and 4 strands of yarn for each tassel, make 2 tassels in matching colours in end of each stripe as pictured. Trim to desired length. If desired, paint back of rainbow excluding tassels with fabric stiffener and leave to dry, or alternatively, cut a piece of plastic canvas slightly smaller than rainbow and sew in position to back of rainbow.

Width (approx finished): 61cm
Length (approx finished): 90cm
Tension: 16 sts and 26 rows to 10cm over patt using 4.50mm hook.
PLAYMAT
Using 4.50mm hook and C1, make 98ch.
1st row (RS), 1dc in 2nd ch from hook, 1dc in each ch to end, turn. ... 97dc.
2nd row - 1ch (does not count as a st here or throughout), 1dc in each dc to end, turn.
Rep 2nd row 6 times ... 8 rows in all. Break off C1.
Using C2, 9th row - 1ch, 1dc, miss next dc, spike3 in next st 2 rows below, miss 1dc, 1dc in next dc, rep from to end, turn.
Rep 2nd row 3 times.
Rep last 4 rows once. Break off C2.
Using C3, rep last 8 rows once. Break off C3.
Using C4, rep last 8 rows once. Break off C4.
Using C5, rep last 8 rows once. Break of C5.
Using C6, rep last 8 rows once. Break off C6
Using C7, rep last 8 rows once. Break off C7.
Using C1, rep last 8 rows once. Break off C1.
Rep from to 3 times more. Fasten off.
EDGING
With RS facing and using 4.50mm hook, join C3 with a sl st in any corner.
1st round - 1ch, 2dc in same st, work in dc evenly around all edges, working 3dc in each corner, sl st in 1ch at beg.
Rep 1st round once.
Fasten off.
FINISHING
DO NOT PRESS. Sew in ends towards centre of work.
