Tension

22 sts x 14 rows to 10cm over patt, using 4.5mm hook.

Special abbreviations

Bptr - back post treble

Fptr - front post treble

Beg beanie (worked sideways)

Using 4.5mm hook, make 64ch.

1st row - 1tr in 4th ch from hook and in each ch to last 4ch, 1dc in each ch to end, turn ... 62 sts.

2nd row - 1ch (does not count as a st throughout), 1dc in same and each of next 3 sts, * 1fptr around next st, 1ch, miss next st, rep from * to last 8 sts, 1fptr around each of next 7 sts, 1htr in last st, turn.

3rd row - 1ch, 1htr in same st, 1fptr around each of next 6 sts, 1bptr around next st, * 1ch, miss 1ch sp, 1bptr around next st, rep from * to last 4 sts, 1dc in each of last 4 sts, turn.

4th row - 1ch, 1dc in each st and sp to last 7 sts, 1fptr around each of next 6 sts, 1htr in last st turn.

5th row - 1ch, 1htr in same st, 1fptr around each of next 6 sts, 1tr in each st to last 4 sts, 1dc in each of last 4 sts, turn.

Rows 2 - 5 incl form patt.

Cont in patt until work measures approx 53cm (or length required slightly stretched), ending with a 4th row.

Fasten off, leaving a long end for sewing.

Finishing

Do not press. Using long end left at bottom of beanie and mattress st, join first and last rows tog to form centre back seam. Thread yarn through top of beanie, draw up tightly to gather crown and fasten off securely. Sew in ends.
