POPCORN CROCHET GRANNY SQUARE

WHAT YOU'LL NEED

• 4 Seasons Pure Wool 8 ply 50g balls in colour 1 (C1), colour 2 (C2), colour 3 (C3), colour 4 (C4) and colour 5 (C5). See table below for estimated number of balls for your project
• 4.5mm crochet hook
• Wool needle for finishing

ABBREVIATIONS

beg = begin/ning,ch = chain,ch sp/s = chain space/s,folls = follows,incl = inclusive,lp/s = loop/s,rep = repeat,sl st = slip stitch,st/s = stitch/es, tr = treble.

SPECIAL STITCHES

BP = Beginning Popcorn - ch 3 (counts as 1tr), 3tr, remove hook from working loop. Insert hook, from front to back, under both loops in between ch 3 and 1st treble in the group. Pick up the working loop with the hook and draw it through, ch 1 to secure.
PC = Popcorn - 4tr, remove hook from working loop. Insert hook, from front to back, under both loops in between 1st and 2nd trebles in the group. Pick up the working loop with the hook and draw it through, ch 1 to secure.

POPCORN MOTIF

Using 4.5mm hook and C1, ch 5 and join with sl st in first ch to form a ring.

1st round - BP into ring, ch 4, * PC into ring, ch 4, rep from * twice. Joining with sl st into ch at top of BP. Fasten off.
2nd round - Join C2 in any ch-4 sp, BP, ch 4, PC in same ch-4 sp, * ch 2, (PC, ch 4, PC) in next ch-4 sp, rep from * twice, ch 2, join with sl st into ch at top of BP. Fasten off.
3rd round - Join C3 in any ch-4 sp, BP, ch 4, PC in same ch-4 sp, * ch 2, PC in ch-2 sp, ch 2 **, (PC, ch 4, PC) in next ch-4 sp, rep from * twice more, then from * to ** once more, join with sl st into ch at top of BP. Fasten off.
4th round - Join C4 in any ch-4 sp, BP, ch 4, PC in same ch-4 sp, * (ch 2, PC in next ch-2 sp) twice, ch2 **, (PC, ch 4 PC) in next ch-4 sp, rep from * twic more, then from * to ** once more, join with sl st into ch at top of BP. Fasten off.
5th round - Join C5 in any ch-4 sp, ch 3 (counts as 1tr), 2tr, ch 2, 3tr into same ch-4 sp, *(ch 1, 3tr) into each ch-2 sp along side of square, ch 1 **, (3tr, ch 2, 3tr) into next corner ch-4 sp, rep from * twice more, then from * to ** once more, joing with sl st into top of beg ch. Fasten off.

TO MAKE UP

Sew in ends. Block with steam if desired.
