MARVEL 8PLY PIRATE SET
Level: Intermediate
WHAT YOU'LL NEED:
- 4 Seasons Marvel 8 ply 100g balls: 2 x Black, 2 x Red, 1 x White for the complete set.
- A 6mm crochet hook for Hat and a 4mm crochet hook for the complete set or sizes required to give correct tension
- Scissors, yarn needle, tape measure, 4 x stitch markers for Hat.
MEASUREMENTS
Hat - To Fit Head (approx): up to 55 cm circumference
Red Tapered Sash (approx): 150 x 10 cm
Eyepatch (approx): 6 x 6 cm with 60 cm ties
Bandana (approx): 40 x 46 cm, plus 30 cm ties.
TENSION
Hat: Approx 12.5 sts and 7 rounds to 10cm over treble fabric using 6mm hook and 2 strands of yarn tog.
Red Tapered Sash: 19 sts and 10 rows to 10cm over treble fabric using 4mm hook.
Eyepatch & Bandana: Correct tension is not essential for this item. Tension is not important for this item
Note - The Hat has been worked at a different tension on a larger hook than normally recommended using two strands of yarn tog throughout.
INSTRUCTIONS
SPECIAL ABBREVIATION
Dc dec = (insert hook in next st, yoh, draw through a loop) twice, yoh and draw through all 3 loops on hook.
HAT
Beg at crown
Using 2 strands of Black tog and 6mm hook, make a magic ring.
1st round - 1ch (does not count as a st throughout), 12tr in ring, pull ring tight and sl st into tr at beg ... 12 sts.
2nd round - 1ch, 2tr in same st, 2tr in each st around, sl st into tr at beg ... 24tr.
3rd round - 1ch, 1tr in same st, 2tr in next st, 1tr in next st, rep from to last st, 2tr in last st, sl st into tr at beg ... 36tr.
4th round - 1ch, 1tr in same st, 1tr in next st, 2tr in next st, 1tr in each of next 2 sts, rep from to last st, 2tr in last st, sl st into tr at beg ... 48tr.
5th round - 1ch, 1tr in same st, 1tr in each of next 2 sts, 2tr in next st, 1tr in each of next 3 sts, rep from to last st, 2tr in last st, sl st into tr at beg ... 60tr.
6th round - 1ch, 1tr in same st, 1tr in each st around, sl st into tr at beg.
7th - 14th rounds - Rep 6th round.
15th round - 1ch, 1tr in same st, 1tr in each of next 3 sts, 2tr in next st, 1tr in each of next 4 sts, rep from to last st, 2tr in last st, sl st into tr at beg ... 72tr.
16th round - 1ch, 1tr in same st, 1tr in each of next 4 sts, 2tr in next st, 1tr in each of next 5 sts, rep from to last st, 2tr in last st, sl st into tr at beg ... 84 sts.
17th round - 1ch, 1tr in same st, 1tr in each of next 5 sts, 2tr in next st, 1tr in each of next 6 sts, rep from to last st, 2tr in last st, sl st into tr at beg ... 96 sts.
18th round - 1ch, 1tr in same st, 1tr in each of next 6 sts, 2tr in next st, 1tr in each of next 7 sts, rep from to last st, 2tr in last st, sl st into tr at beg ... 108 sts.
19th round - 1ch, 1tr in same st, 1tr in each of next 7 sts, 2tr in next st, 1tr in each of next 8 sts, rep from to last st, 2tr in last st, sl st into tr at beg ... 120 sts.
20th round - 1ch, 1tr in same st, 1tr in each of next 8 sts, 2tr in next st, 1tr in each of next 9 sts, rep from to last st, 2tr in last st, sl st into tr at beg ... 132 sts. Fasten off Black.
Using 2 strands White tog - 21st round - 1ch, 1htr in same st, 1htr in each st around, sl st into htr at beg. Fasten off.
Skull Applique
Using one strand of White and 4mm hook, make a magic ring.
1st round - 1ch (does not count as a st), 12tr in ring, sl st into tr at beg ... 12 sts.
2nd round - 1ch, 2tr in same st, 2tr in each st around, sl st into tr at beg ... 24 sts.
3rd row - 1ch, dc dec over same and next st, 2dc in next st, 1dc in next st, 2dc in next st, dc dec over next 2 sts, turn.
4th row - 1ch, dc dec over same and next st, 1dc in each of next 3 sts, dc dec over last 2 sts. Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing.
Eyes for Skull (make 2)
Using one strand of Black and 4mm hook, make 3ch, miss 1ch, 1dc in 2nd and 3rd ch. Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing.
Bones Applique (make 2)
Using one strand of White and 4mm hook, make 17ch.
1st round - 6tr in 4th ch from hook, 1dc in each of next 12ch, 7tr in last ch, rotate to work along opposite side of ch, 1dc in each of next 12 ch, sl st into last ch before first tr. Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing.
FINISHING
DO NOT PRESS. Place a stitch marker in any st of brim edge. Place another stitch marker 66 sts along from first stitch marker: they should indicate the halfway points around the brim. Count 16 sts forwards and backwards from one of the stitch markers, and place a stitch marker at each of these points. Bring the edges of the brim together at these two markers and using white yarn, sew edges together from this point back to the centre marker for approx 3cm. Complete other side of hat in the same way.
Sew eyes onto skull as shown, and outline teeth using Black. Sew skull and crossed bones onto brim of hat as shown. Sew in ends.
RED TAPERED SASH
SPECIAL ABBREVIATIONS

Beg Sash
Using Red and 4mm hook, make a magic ring
1st row - 1ch (does not count as a st throughout), 3tr in ring, pull ring tight, turn ... 3 sts.
2nd row - 1ch, 1tr in same st, 1tr in each st to end, turn.
3rd row - 1ch, 2tr in same st, 1tr in each st to last st, 2tr in last st, turn ... 5 sts.
Rep 2nd and 3rd rows until there are 19 sts.
Cont in tr until sash measures 132cm from beg.
Next row (dec row) - 1ch, tr dec, 1tr in each st to last 2 sts, tr dec, turn ... 17 sts.
Next row - 1ch, 1tr in same st, 1tr in each st to end.
Rep last 2 rows until 3 sts rem.
Work 1 row, turn.
Last row - 1ch, 3tr dec over same and next 2 sts.
Fasten off. DO NOT PRESS. Sew in ends.
EYEPATCH
Beg Eyepatch
With Black and 4mm hook, make 6ch.
1st row - Miss 1ch (does not count as a st), 1dc in each ch to last ch, 5dc in last ch, rotate to work along opposite side of ch, 1dc in each ch to last ch, turn ... 13 sts.
2nd row - 1ch (does not count as a st throughout), 1dc in same st, 1dc in each of next 4 sts, 2dc in each of next 3 sts, 1dc in each of next 5 sts, turn ... 16 sts.
3rd row - 1ch, 1dc in same st, 1dc in each of next 5 sts, (2dc in next st, 1dc in next st) 3 times, 1dc in each of next 4 sts, turn ... 19 sts.
4th row - 1ch, 1dc in same st, 1dc in each of next 5 sts, (2dc in next st, 1dc in each of next 2 sts) 3 times, 1dc in each of next 4 sts, turn ... 22 sts.
5th row - 1ch, 1dc in same st, 1dc in each st to end, turn.
6th row - 1ch, 1dc in same st, 1dc in each st to end, make 100ch, miss 1ch, 1dc in each ch to eyepatch, work dc evenly across top of eyepatch, make 100ch, miss 1ch, 1dc in each ch to end, sl st into side of eyepatch just below start of tie just worked.
Fasten off. DO NOT PRESS. Sew in ends.
BANDANA
Beg Bandana
Using Red and 4mm hook, make a magic ring.
1st row - 1ch (does not count as a st throughout), 3tr in ring, pull ring tight, turn ... 3 sts.
2nd row - 1ch, 2tr in same st, 1tr in next st, 2tr in last st, turn ... 5 sts.
3rd row - 1ch, 2tr in same st, 1tr in each st to last st, 2tr in last st, turn ... 7 sts. Fasten off Red.
Using White - 4th row - 1ch, 2tr in same st, 1tr in each st to last st, 2tr in last st, turn ... 9 sts.
5th - 6th rows - Rep 4th row.
Last 6 rows form stripe patt.
Keeping stripe patt correct for rem, cont inc until 38th row is completed ... 77 sts. Do not fasten off.
Ties and edging - Make 52ch, 1tr in 4th ch from hook, 1tr in each ch to end, 1tr in each st along top edge of Bandana, make 52ch, 1tr in 4th ch from hook, 1tr in each ch to end, 1dc in side of Bandana one row below top edge, work in dc evenly along both sloped side edges of Bandana working 3dc in point, sl st into start of first tie.
Fasten off. DO NOT PRESS. Sew in ends.
