SPECIAL ABBREVIATIONS
tr2tog (tr 2 sts together)= (Yoh, insert hook in next st and draw up a loop, yoh and draw through 2 loops) twice, yoh and draw through all 3 loops on hook ... 1 st decreased.
tr3tog (tr 3 sts together)= (Yoh, insert hook in next st and draw up a loop, yoh, draw through 2 loops) 3 times, yoh and draw through all 4 loops on hook ... 2 sts decreased.
tr4tog (tr 4 sts together)= (Yoh, insert hook in next st and draw up a loop, yoh, draw through 2 loops) 4 times, yoh and draw through all 5 loops on hook ... 3 sts decreased.
NOTES
1. Shawl is worked in a ripple crochet pattern. The ripple pattern is easy to do, but it's important to remember that you may need to work several rows before the ripple pattern becomes clear.
2. The ripple in this design is created by skipping sts on dc rows and working trtogs on tr rows to form 'valleys' and working (1dc, 2ch, 1dc) on dc rows and (1tr, 3ch,1tr) on tr rows to form 'peaks'. Take care to work valleys centered over valleys peaks into the ch-sp of peaks of previous row.
3. An edging is worked across both short ends of Shawl.
SHAWL
Using 6mm hook, make 241 ch.
1st row (RS) - 1dc in 2nd ch from hook, 1dc in each of next 9ch, * 2ch, 1dc in each of next 9ch, sk next 2ch, 1dc in each of next 9ch, rep from * to last 10ch, 2ch, 1dc in each of last 10ch, turn ... 218dc and 12 x 2ch-sps forming 12 ripples at the end of this row.
2nd row - 3ch (does not count as st), sk first st, tr2tog, (1ch, sk next st, 1tr in next st) 3 times, 1ch, sk next st, (1tr, 3ch, 1tr) in next 2ch-sp, 1tr in each of next 7 sts,* tr4tog, (1ch, sk next st, 1tr in next st) 3 times, 1ch, sk next st, (1tr, 3ch, 1tr) in next 2ch-sp, 1tr in each of next 7 sts rep from * to last 3 sts, tr3tog, turn ... 144tr and 12 x 3ch-sps.
3rd row - 1ch, 1dc in in each of first 9 sts, (1dc, 2ch, 1dc) in next 3ch-sp, (1dc in next st, 1dc in next 1ch-sp) 4 times, * sk next st, 1dc in each of next 8 sts, (1dc, 2ch, 1dc) in next 3ch-sp, (1dc in next st, 1dc in next 1ch-sp) 4 times, rep from * to last tr2tog, sk tr2tog, 1dc in top of turning ch, turn.
4th -7th rows - Rep 2nd and 3rd rows twice.
8th row - 3ch (does not count as st), sk first st, tr2tog, 1tr in each of next 7 sts, (1tr,3 ch, 1tr) in next 2ch-sp, (1ch, sk next st, 1tr in next st) 3 times, * 1ch, sk next st, tr4tog, 1tr in each of next 7 sts, (1tr, 3ch, 1tr) in next 2ch-sp, (1ch, sk next st, 1tr in next st) 3 times, rep from * to last 4 sts, 1ch, sk next st, tr3tog, turn.
9th row - 1ch, 1dc in first st, (1dc in next 1ch-sp, 1dc in next st) 4 times, (1dc, 2ch, 1dc) in next 3ch-sp, 1dc in each of next 8 sts, * sk next st, (1dc in next 1ch-sp, 1dc in next st) 4 times, (1dc, 2ch, 1dc) in next 3ch-sp, 1dc in each of next 8 sts, rep from * to last tr2tog, sk tr2tog, 1dc in top of turning ch, turn.

EDGING
With RS facing and using 6mm hook, join yarn with a sl st in corner to work across a short edge of Shawl.
1st row (RS) - 1ch, working in ends of rows, work dc evenly spaced across short edge.
Fasten off. Rep edging across other end of Shawl.
FINISHING
DO NOT PRESS. Sew in ends.
