Instructions

Size: Adjustable from child to adult.

Tension: 17 sts to 10cm over htr fabric using 4mm hook

Note: Gold 'metal' parts of crown are worked with 1 strand of Marvel Amber 12ply and 1 strand of Milford Metallic Old Gold tog on a smaller hook than usually recommended for the Marvel. The Fake Fur Edging part of crown is worked to fit the head of the wearer and stitched into place, and worked on a smaller hook than usually recommended.

Special Stitches

Dc2tog = Double crochet 2 stitches together: insert hook in specified st, yoh and draw loop through, insert hook in next st, yoh and draw loop through, yoh and draw loop through rem 3 loops on hook.

Tr2tog = Treble 2 stitches together: yoh, insert hook in specified st, yoh and draw loop through, yoh and draw through 2 loops, yoh and insert hook in next st, yoh and draw loop through, yoh and draw through 2 loops, yoh and draw loop through rem 3 loops on hook.

Beg Gold Band -

Using 1 strand Marvel and 1 strand Metallic tog, and 4mm hook, make 97ch, sl st to 1st ch to form a ring.

1st round - 1ch (does not count as a st throughout), 1dc in same ch, 1dc in each ch to end, sl st into dc at beg ... 96 sts.

2nd round - 1ch, 1dc in same st and each st around, sl st into dc at beg.

3rd round - 1ch, turn to work in opp direction, work 1dc in same st and loop of base ch directly below (thus joining top and bottom of piece worked to form crown edge), 1dc in each st and corresponding loop of base ch around, sl st into dc at beg, do not turn.

4th round - 2ch (does not count as a st throughout), 1hdc in same st and each st around, sl st into hdc at beg, do not turn.

5th - 7th rounds - Rep 4th round.

Fasten off. Place a stitch marker in every 12th st around, 8 stitch markers in total.

Beg Jewelled Strips (make 2) -

Using 1 strand Marvel and 1 strand Metallic tog, and 4mm hook, make 10ch, leaving a tail for sewing.

1st row - Miss 2ch, 1htr in next ch and each ch to end ... 8 sts.

2nd row - 2ch, 1htr in same st and each st to end.

3rd - 60th rows - Rep 2nd row.

Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing.

Beg Fake Fur Edging -

Using Nippers and 4mm hook, make 12ch, sl st to first ch to form a ring.

1st round - 2ch, 1tr in same ch and each ch around, sl st into tr at beg ... 12 sts.

2nd round - 2ch, 1tr in same st and each st around, sl st into tr at beg.

Rep 2nd round until tube measures length required to fit wearer's head.

Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing.

Beg Cap -

Using Stallion and 4mm hook, make a magic ring.

1st round - 2ch, 16tr in ring, sl st into tr at beg ... 16 sts.

2nd round - 2ch, 2tr in same st and each st around, sl st into tr at beg ... 32 sts.

3rd round - 2ch, 2tr in same st and each st around, sl st into tr at beg ... 64 sts.

4th round - 2ch, 1tr in same st and each st around, sl st into tr at beg.

5th round - 2ch, 2tr in same st and each st around, sl st into tr at beg ... 128 sts.

6th - 20th rounds - 2ch, 1tr in same st and each st around.

21st round - 1tr in same st and next st, tr2tog, 1tr in each of next 2 sts, tr2tog, rep from around, sl st into tr at beg ... 96 sts.

22nd - 25th rounds - 2ch, 1tr in same st and each st around, sl st into tr at beg.

Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing.

Beg Sphere -

Using 1 strand Marvel and 1 strand Metallic tog, and 4mm hook, make a magic ring.

1st round - 1ch, 6dc in ring, sl st into dc at beg ... 6 sts.

2nd round - 1ch, 2dc in same st and each st around, sl st into dc at beg ... 12 sts.

3rd round - 1ch, 1dc in same st, 2dc in next st, 1dc in each of next 2 sts, 2dc in next st, 1dc in next st, 2dc in next st, rep from once, sl st into dc at beg ... 17 sts.

4th round - 1ch, 1dc in same st, 2dc in next st, 1dc in each of next 3 sts, 2dc in next st, 1dc in each of next 2 sts, 2dc in next st, rep from once, 1dc in last st, sl st into dc at beg ... 22 sts.

10th round - 1ch, 1dc in same st and each of next 17 sts, dc2tog, 1dc in each of next 13 sts, sl st into dc at beg ... 32 sts.

11th round - 1ch, 1dc in same st, dc2tog, 1dc in each of next 9 sts, dc2tog, 1dc in each of next 9 sts, dc2tog, 1dc in each of next 7 sts, sl st into dc at beg ... 29 sts.

12th round - 1ch, 1dc in same st and each of next 3 sts, dc2tog, 1dc in each of next 8 sts, dc2tog, 1dc in each of next 7 sts, dc2tog, 1dc in each of next 4 sts, sl st into dc at beg ... 26 sts.

13th round - 1dc in same st and next st, dc2tog, 1dc in each of next 5 sts, dc2tog, 1dc in each of next 4 sts, dc2tog, 1dc in each of next 5 sts, dc2tog, 1dc in each of next 2 sts, sl st into dc at beg ... 22 sts.

14th round - 1ch, 1dc in same st, dc2tog, 1dc in each of next 2 sts, dc2tog, 1dc in each of next 3 sts, dc2tog, rep from once, 1dc in next st, sl st into dc at beg ... 17 sts.

Stuff sphere firmly with Hobby Fill.

15th round - 1ch, dc2tog same st and next st, 1dc in next st, dc2tog, 1dc in each of next 2 sts, dc2tog, rep from once, 1dc in next st, sl st into dc at beg ... 12 sts.

Add more fill before final round.

16th round - 1ch, dc2tog same st and next st, (dc2tog) 5 times, sl st into dc2tog at beg ... 6 sts.

Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing. Using yarn needle and tail, pass yarn through front loops of each st, pull tightly and fasten off firmly. Leave rem tail for attaching to crown.

Beg Large Cross Centre (make 4) -

Using 1 strand Marvel and 1 strand Metallic tog, and 4mm hook, make a magic ring.

1st round - 1ch, 12dc in ring, sl st into dc at beg ... 12 sts.

2nd round - 1ch, 2dc in same st, 1dc in next st, 2dc in each of next 2 sts, 1dc in next st, rep from to last st, 2dc in last st, sl st into dc at beg ... 20 sts.

Beg First 'Arm' -

1st row - 1ch, 1dc in same st and each of next 4 sts, turn ... 5 sts.

2nd row - Rep 1st row.

3rd row - 1ch, 2dc in same st, 1dc in each st to last st, 2dc in last st, turn ... 7 sts.

4th row - Rep 3rd row ... 9 sts.

5th row - 3ch (counts as tr), (1tr, 1htr) in same st, 1dc in each st to last st, (1htr, 2tr) in last st ... 13 sts.

Fasten off.

Beg Second Arm -

Join yarn to next st of cross centre.

Work 1st - 5th rows of First Arm.

Make third and fourth Arms in same way as second Arm, leaving a tail on fourth Arm for sewing.

Beg Small Cross Centre (make 2) -

Using 1 strand Marvel and 1 strand Metallic tog and 4mm hook, make a magic ring.

1st round - 1ch, 8dc in ring, sl st into dc at beg ... 8 sts.

Beg First 'Arm' -

1st row - 1ch, 1dc in same st and next st, turn ... 2 sts.

2nd row - Rep 1st row.

3rd row - 1ch, 2dc in same st and next st, turn ... 4 sts.

4th row - 3ch, (1htr, 1dc) in same st, 1dc in each of next 2 sts, (1dc, 1htr, 1tr) in last st.... 8 sts.

Fasten off.

Beg Second 'Arm' -

Join yarn to next st of cross centre. Work 1st - 4th rows of First Arm.

Make third and fourth Arms in same way as Second Arm, leaving a tail on fourth Arm for sewing.

Beg Fleur-de-Lis Base (make 4) -

Using 1 strand Marvel and 1 strand Metallic tog, and 4mm hook, make 3ch.

1st row - Miss 1ch, 1dc in each of next 2ch ... 2 sts.

2nd row - 1ch, 1dc in same st and next st.

3rd row - Rep 2nd row.

4th row - 1ch, 2dc in same st, 1dc in next st ... 3 sts.

5th row - 1ch, 1dc in same st and each st to end.

6th row - Rep 5th row.

7th row - 1ch, 2dc in same st, 1dc in each st to end ... 4 sts.

8th and 9th rows - Rep 5th row.

10th row - Rep 7th row ... 5 sts.

Beg First Petal -

1st row - 1ch, (1dc, 1tr) in same st, turn ... 2 sts.

2nd row - 2ch, miss same st, (1htr, 1dc) in next st, turn ... 2 sts.

3rd row - 1ch, 1dc in same st, tr2tog same st and next st, turn ... 2 sts.

4th row - 2ch, miss same st, (1htr, 1dc) in next st, turn ... 2 sts.

5th row - 1ch, 1dc in same st, tr2tog same st and next st ... 2 sts.

Beg Second Petal -

Join 1 strand Marvel and 1 strand Metallic tog to next st of Fleur-de-Lis Base, and using 4mm hook,

1st row - 1ch, 1dc in same st and each of next 2 sts, turn ... 3 sts.

2nd row - 1ch, dc2tog, 1dc in last st, turn ... 2 sts.

3rd row - 1ch, dc2tog, turn ... 1 st.

4th row - 1ch, 1dc in same st.

Fasten off.

Beg Third Petal -

Turn work and join 1 strand Marvel and 1 strand Metallic tog to last st of Fleur-de-Lis Base, and using 4mm hook, work to correspond to First Petal.

FINISHING

DO NOT PRESS. Join ends of Fake Fur Edging to form a ring, sew to inside lower edge of Gold Band, easing Band to fit if necessary. Sew Cap to inside top edge of Band. Position one Jewelled Strip so centre of strip matches two opposing stitch markers on Band as pictured and sew in place. Position second Strip at right angles to first Strip as pictured, matching centre of Strip to opposing stitch markers and sew in place.

Cut 4 x 60cm lengths of Gold Wire and thread one wire through each edge of Strips, using pliers to turn ends of wire into top of Band and back along inside edge of Strip, trimming to fit length of Strips. Shape as pictured.

Sew tips of each Large Cross Arm to the tip of neighbouring Arm. Sew one Large Cross at base of each Strip as pictured. Position Fleur-de-Lis at rem stitch markers as pictured between Large Crosses on Band and sew in place to Band and Cross at either side.

Place both Small Crosses together and sew three Arms of Crosses tog. Spread 4th Arm of each Cross over Sphere and stitch into place so Cross stands upright. Sew Sphere firmly through centre of crossed Strips and into centre of Cap beneath so that Sphere stands upright with cross at top.

Glue and sew rhinestones and cased stones as desired to Band, Strips, Crosses and Fleur-de-lis.
