FRAMED BOATER HAT
Level: Intermediate
What you'll need:
- Black hat base
- Headband
- Arbee Galvanized Metal Ring Silver
- Vivaldi Stem Wire 20 Pack
- Black Birch Cotton Bias Binding Pack x 2
- Wire cutters
- Hot glue gun and glue sticks
- Beaded flowers
- Needle and thread
- Scissors
- Fabric glue
Instructions
Step 1- Take the black binding and cut enough to cover around the large metal ring. Use the fabric glue to glue the binding around the ring and overlap the ends to cover the metal completely. Leave to dry.
Step 2- To create the arched edges of the brim, take the vivaldi stem wire and bend it into an arch shape. Repeat this with X amount of wire stems, use the wire cutters to cut off any excess.
Step 3- Cut strips of binding the same size as the wire arches. Fold the binding in on itself and use a small amount of fabric glue along the edge to secure. Repeat this with each piece of binding for the arches and leave to dry.
Step 4- Once the binding is dry, thread the wire arches through the binding to cover the metal.
Step 5- Now it's time to build the brim. On a flat surface, lay down the large wire ring and place the hat centred in the middle. Next take the small wire arches and begin overlapping them on the brim of the hat to create a cross over pattern. Play with the arches until you are happy with the design.
Step 6- Attach the arches to the hat and the large wire ring with either hot glue, fabric glue or a needle and thread. Ensure everything is secured well around the entire brim.
Step 7- Using the hot glue gun, position and secure the beaded flowers around the brim of the hat.
Step 8- To finish, attach the hat onto a headband in the position you desire. It helps to do this in front of a mirror so you can see how it will sit on your head.
