CUSHION 1 - TREE:
- 80cm Prima Homespun, natural seeded
- DMC Perle #5 embroidery thread, red
- 1 x size 20 Cushion insert (51cm x 51cm)
CUSHION 2 - BAUBLE:
- 50cm Prima Homespun, natural seeded
- DMC Perle #5 embroidery thread, red
- 1 x size 16 Cushion insert (41cm x 41cm)
CUSHION 3 - DIAGONAL STRIPS:
- 1 x size 18 Cushion insert (46cm x 46cm)

- Christmas Tartan Fat 1/4 Bundle
- Matching Gutermann 100% cotton thread

Note: 1/4" seam allowance used throughout unlessotherwise indicated. Read all instructions carefully before commencing the project.
INSTRUCTIONS
CUSHION 1 - TREE
Step 1. From 9 jelly roll strips cut the following lengths (from bottom to top)- 15", 13", 11", 9", 7", 5 1/2", 4", 2 1/2" and 1 1/4", cut a 1 1/2" length for the tree trunk.
Step 2. With right sides facing, centre the 13" strip on top of the 15" strip (1" of longer strip at each end). Pin and sew together down one long side. Press seam towards the longer strip pressing seam allowance of the longer strip to the wrong side.
Step 3. Repeat step 2 using the 9" and 11" strips, then the 5 1/2" and 7" strips, and the 2 1/2" and 4" strips.
Step 4. Using the same method, sew the two larger pairs together then the two smaller pairs.
Repeat to sew the two sections together.
Step 5. Sew the 1 1/4" strip to the top of the tree and press top seam allowance to the wrong side. Sew the 1 1/2" strip to the bottom of the 15" strip and press bottom edge
seam allowance to the wrong side.
Step 6. From the natural seeded homespun cut one 20" square for the cushion front and two 20" x 14" rectangles for the back.
Step 7. Centre the tree on the 20" homespun square and pin in place. Baste in place if desired.
Step 8. Topstitch 1/8" in from the edge around all 4 sides of the 15" strip. For the next 8 strips topstitch up one side across the top edge and down the other side. For the trunk at the bottom topstitch down the sides and across the bottom edge.
Step 9. For the cushion backs, sew a double hem along one 20" long side of each rectangle - fold and press under 1/4" then another 1/4" and topstitch hem in place.
Step 10. With cushion front right side up, place one hemmed back piece face down on top, aligning top and side raw edges with hemmed edge towards the centre Pin in place. Place other piece face down on top aligning bottom and side edges with hemmed edge overlapping the other piece in the centre. Pin in place.
Step 11. Sew together around all four sides using 1/4" seam allowance. Clip corners and overlock or zigzag seams to neaten. Turn cover right side out and press flat.
Step 12. Using thread to match the homespun sew around all 4 sides 3/4" in from the edge. Using red Perle #5 hand sew a running stitch around the edge on top of the stitching. Press well and place insert into cover with back edges overlapping.
CUSHION 2 - BAUBLE
Step 1. From 9 jelly roll strips cut the following lengths (from bottom to top) - 2", 4", 6", 8", 9 3/4", 12", 10", 8", 6", 3 3/4", 1 3/4" and 1".
Step 2. Arrange strips in order from bottom to top. For added interest some strips have also been cut along the length of the strip. Cut one strip at a time and return to the layout. From bottom to top cut as follows - 1 1/4", 1 3/4", 1 1/2", 1 3/4", 1 1/2", uncut 2 1/2", 1 3/4", 2", 1 3/4", 1 1/4", 1" and 3/4".
Step 3. Using the same method as in step 2 of cushion 1, start with the 12" x 2 1/2" strip and join the strips above. Then go back to the 12" x 2 1/2" strip and work in the opposite direction to join the strips below. Press seam allowance of top and bottom strips to the wrong side.
Step 4. From the natural seeded homespun cut one 16" square for the cushion front and two 16" x 12" rectangles for the back.
Step 5. Centre the bauble on the 16" homespun square and pin in place. Baste in place if desired.
Step 6. Topstitch 1/8" in from the edge around all 4 sides of the 12" strip. For the strips above topstitch up one side across the top edge and down the other side. For the strips below topstitch down the sides and across the bottom edge.
Step 7. For the cushion backs, sew a double hem along one 16" long side of each rectangle - fold and press under 1/4" then another 1/4" and topstitch hem in place.
Step 8. To finish repeat steps 10-12 from cushion 1.
CUSHION 3 - DIAGONAL STRIPS
Step 1. From 9 jelly roll strips cut the following lengths (from bottom right to top left) - 4", 8", 12", 16", 20", 24", 27", 26", 22", 18", 14", 10" and 6".
Step 2. Arrange strips in order from bottom right to top left. With right sides facing, centre the 26" strip on top of the 27" strip ( 1/2" of longer strip can be seen at each end). Pin and sew together down one long side.
Step 3. With right sides facing, centre and pin the 24" strip on the unstitched side of the 27" strip and sew together. Continue in this manner adding each strip in turn (20", 16", 12", 8", 4") working down to the right-hand corner.
Step 4. With right sides facing, centre the 22" strip on top of the 26" strip and sew together using the same method. Continue in this manner adding each strip in turn (18", 14", 10", 6") working up to the left-hand corner.
Step 5. Press all seams down towards the right-hand corner. Topstitch 1/8" in from seams.
Step 6. To get one straight edge for the cushion front align the 45 degree angle on the ruler along a seam and trim one edge. Using this straight edge trim to an 18" square.
Step 7. For the cushion backs, cut 14 x 18" lengths from the remaining jelly strips. Strip piece into two 7-strip sets. Press seams in one direction. Sew a double hem along one end strip of each set.
Step 8. With cushion front right side up, place one hemmed back piece face down on top, aligning top and side raw edges with hemmed edge towards the centre. Pin in place. Place other piece face down on top aligning bottom and side edges with hemmed edge overlapping the other piece in the centre. Pin in place.
Step 9. Sew together around all four sides using 1/4" seam allowance. Clip corners and overlock or zigzag seams to neaten. Turn cover right side out and press flat.
Step 10. Place size 18 insert into cover with back edges overlapping.
CHECK CUSHION
Step 1. Select 3 flat 1/4" form the bundle. From one cut an 18" square for the cushion front. From the each of the other two cut an 18" x 14" rectangle for the backs.
Step 2. To sew a double hem along one 18" long side of each rectangle, fold and press under 1/4" then another 1/4" and topstitch hem in place.
Step 3. With cushion front right side up, place one hemmed back piece face down on top, aligning top and side raw edges with hemmed edge towards the centre. Pin in place. Place other piece face down on top aligning bottom and side edges with hemmed edge overlapping the other piece in the centre. Pin in place.
Step 4. Sew together around all four sides using 1/4" seam allowance. Clip corners and overlock or zigzag seams to neaten. Turn cover right side out and press flat.Step 5. Press well and place insert into cover with back edges overlapping.
