FELT NAME FLAGS
Level: Easy
WHAT YOU'LL NEED:
- A3 Acrylic Felt Sheets for the base
- Felt Sheets for the top
- Fabric glue
- Scissors
- Pencil and paper
- Pins
- Sewing machine and matching thread
INSTRUCTIONS
Step 1 - To start, draw a triangle shape the size you wish your flag to be on a spare piece of paper/card. We made flags 42cm long x 20cm high. Trace this shape out onto the large A3 piece of felt and cut out.
Step 2 - Draw the name you want on your design onto a piece of paper or print one off if you are not confident in drawing. There are plenty of great Font websites that you can find if you need some inspiration on a font type. Ensure the name fits nicely into the size of your flag base.
Step 3 - Once you have your name letters on paper, cut out to create a template. Trace the letter template onto your piece of felt with the template facing backwards. This way when you cut it out any pen marks will be on the wrong side of the felt and the right side will be nice and clean.
Step 4 - Lay the felt letters onto your flag in the position you wish it to sit. Use the fabric glue to carefully glue into place. Alternatively, you can machine, or hand stitch the felt in place too.
Step 5 - While the glue is drying you can cut out and other decorative pieces of felt for your design. You may want to underline the Name or add some arrows, be as creative as you like! Once you've cut out the extra felt pieces again attach using fabric glue or sew in place.
Step 6 - To make the ties, cut 4 x pieces of felt roughly 1cm wide x 10cm long. Place the ties in pairs on either ends of the flag. Place 1 of the ties on top and the other underneath the flag to even out the bulk. Pin and sew in place roughly 5mm from the edge, repeat with the other pair of ties on the other side.
Step 7 - To finish your flag, cut 2 pieces of felt that are the width of the flag and roughly 2cm wide. These pieces will sit at the end of your flag and sandwich the felt in the middle with the ties. Lay the pieces on top and bottom of the flag and pin in place. Top stitch down with a 3mm seam allowance to secure. Your flag is now ready to be hung!
