What cutlery comes in a cutlery set?

What comes in your cutlery set will depend on the specifics of the set - you may be after an all-rounded set featuring knives, forks and spoons, or you might just need a simple steak knife set. General sets will feature knives, forks and a mix of teaspoons and tablespoons - some may feature an extra steak knife, and some may feature soup spoons as well.

Most cutlery is made from stainless steel, as it is durable and easy to clean, although some may have a textured or matte finish for a different look.

Cutlery set FAQ

What is a cutlery set?

A cutlery set is a collection of cutlery that contains a good spread of different cutlery types. General cutlery sets will feature a mixture of knives, forks and spoons, although you can also find specialised sets featuring specific cutlery like steak knives, cake forks or latte spoons.

How to set table cutlery

If you are just setting the table with a single fork and knife per person, place the fork to the left of the place setting and the knife on the right with the bladed edge facing inwards. If you have a serviette on the table per guest, place the cutlery on this instead, but still with the fork on the left and the knife facing in on the right.

If you are setting the table with entree cutlery, set these on the outside of the main cutlery - so your entree fork is on the left of your main fork, and your butter/entree knife is on the right of your main knife. Your guests should work their way through the cutlery as they change courses. A dessert spoon can be laid across the top of the setting horizontally if needed.

How to keep cutlery clean and shiny

Washing your cutlery in hot water is a must to keep it shiny - a dishwasher will usually do this fine, although you should immediately remove the cutlery once the cycle is done and hand dry it so water spots and rust don't form. To make cutlery extra shiny, create a mixture of hot water and vinegar, dip the cutlery in and then dry and polish with a soft cloth.
