Baking a cake for a gathering of friends and family - whatever the reason - involves creativity, patience, planning and a lot of love. It's only fitting that your finished product is presented perfectly to honour your great effort, while also bringing out your cake's wow-factor.

Present it on a cake plate or cake stand

Nothing gives a special cake - for that special someone - an air of style and elegance quite like a traditional cake stand. Cake stands come into their own for more conventionally sized and shaped cakes, and for presenting cupcakes or finger foods for afternoon or high teas.

Available as round and square stands, cake stands typically come with a foot (or pedestal) or a flat base, and are extremely popular at weddings and other formal celebratory occasions for their elevation of the cake to prominence.

On the other hand, cake plates sit low to the table and come in a wider variety of shapes and sizes. This makes them more versatile than cake stands if your cake is rectangular or you've baked a themed cake for the kids shaped as a superhero or a train or a TV character.

Because they're usually thicker and broader than a cake stand, cake plates offer larger cakes more stability than a cake stand. As well as putting the finishing touches on your cake's presentation, cake plates are versatile enough to be used as serving plates and bowls at casual get-togethers, BBQs or family dinners.

Keeping your cake fresh

It's important to ensure your cake remains fresh between taking it from the oven and serving it up at your event, or even when keeping the leftovers after the party. Whether iced or not, cakes can last at room temperature in an airtight container for three to five days. To keep them fresher for longer, they can be stored in your freezer.

If you plan to ice your cake closer to the event day, placing it inside a sealed, airtight container will keep the freshness and moisture locked in. If you're creating a layered or half-cake, place a sheet of baking paper between the layers before you close the lid. When stored in a cool, dry place, your un-iced cake should keep for three to five days.

For iced and/or decorated cakes, place toothpicks on the top and sides of the cake when you've finished decorating it, and then place two or three layers of cling wrap gently over the toothpicks. This will help you seal in moisture and protect the decoration from making contact with the cling wrap.

If your icing involves dairy products - like mascarpone or cream cheese - or has a fruit centre, store in an airtight container in the fridge.
