What does uncoated mean?

Uncoated means that these fabrics have not been treated or coated with a product for a particular purpose. This means that our uncoated curtain fabrics are ideal for creating a window dressing that does not block out all the light but is not sheer. They are often made from tightly woven cotton or polyester blends and offer a reasonable amount of insulation. If you are looking for increased blockout or thermal properties, then we recommend checking out our coated curtain fabric collections.

What is included in this range?

This range includes our comprehensive collection of uncoated curtain fabrics, with classic patterns and solid colours. Featuring just about every colour of the rainbow, you are sure to find the fabric to match your home right here. Whether you are looking for traditional style, or contemporary chic, something fabulously floral or neutral and trendy, we have got the perfect fabric for you in this selection. Plus, lots of our uncoated curtain fabrics are sold by the metre so that you can order the required amount for your curtain project.

Do I need to add a lining if I am making curtains with uncoated fabrics?

Whether you line your homemade curtains is up to you. Curtains are usually lined, and there are several benefits to doing this. Lining will extend the life of your curtains, helping to prevent the fabric from becoming faded and protecting vibrant patterns and delicate fabrics. They will also allow for increased privacy, reduce the amount of light that filters through, and adds insulation. Lining your new curtains can also make them hang better, enhancing the appearance and overall aesthetic of your window design.

If you do require thermal or blockout properties, then you could line your curtains with fabrics that offer these. Yet, not all curtains require lining, and it may be that you would prefer to keep your curtains unlined, Perhaps you are looking for something light in the summer, making curtains with a sheer fabric, or you are using a material that is already heavy, then it is possible that you do not need to consider lining. At Spotlight, we have everything that you need to create beautiful curtains at home, and if you are choosing to line your homemade creations, then check out our extensive fabric lining selection.

Do I need to pre-wash my fabrics?

That does depend on which of our fabrics you have chosen, however, pre-washing can help to ensure that your finished project has the professional finish you desire. It is recommended that you hand wash your chosen fabric in cold water prior to doing your project. This allows for shrinkage as well as helping to prevent any potential issues due to colour bleeding.

How should I care for my uncoated curtain fabrics?

The way that you wash your uncoated curtain fabric may depend on which you have chosen, and we always recommend reading the manufacturer's instructions before you begin. Check to see whether the fabric that you have selected is machine washable, and we recommend a gentle wash cycle at a low temperature. Do not tumble dry your curtains, instead, hang to dry, and always avoid the use of any harsh chemicals such as chlorine and bleach.
