Living Coastal Quilt Project

What you'll need:

  • Fabrics are from 'Living Coastal' range:
    • 1 Panel Fabric A - Block Panel, Multi
    • 90cm Fabric B - Batik, Blue/Green (includes binding)
    • 50cm Fabric C - Circles, Multi
    • 40cm Fabric D - Geometric, Multi
    • 90cm Fabric E - Batik, Multi
    • 50cm Fabric F - Stripe, Multi
  • 1.6 m x 250 cm wide Backing fabric of choice
  • 1.6 m Prima Cotton batting
  • Matching Gutermann 100% cotton thread
  • Rotary cutter, mat & quilters rulers
  • Optional - 12 1/2" square quilting ruler
  • Quilting pins, tape measure
  • Scissors, seam ripper
  • Frixion marker
  • Hand needle
  • Sewing machine with 1/4" foot & walking foot

All fabrics should be 100% cotton, washed & pressed.

1/4" seam allowance used throughout unless otherwise indicated.

Read all instructions carefully before commencing the quilt.

Cutting

All strips are cut across the width of fabric unless otherwise stated.

  • From Panel Fabric A trim each of the nine blocks to 11 1/2"square.
  • From Fabric B cut 12 x 1 1/2" strips for inner border, crosscut strips into 18 x 11 1/2" lengths and 11 x 13 1/2" lengths, cut 6 x 2 1/2" strips and set aside for binding
  • From Fabric C cut 5 x 3" strips, crosscut strips into 5 x 13 1/2" lengths and 5 x 18 1/2" lengths.
  • From Fabric D cut 4 x 3" strips, crosscut strips into 4 x 13 1/2" lengths and 4 x 18 1/2" lengths.
  • From Fabric E cut 6 x 5 1/2" strips, crosscut into 36 x 5 1/2" squares.
  • From Fabric F cut 6 x 2 1/2" strips for outer border.



Blocks

Step 1 - Arrange panel squares in desired layout of 3 x 3 or refer to image for our layout.

Row 1 - Blocks 1, 2, 3

Row 2 - Blocks 4, 5, 6

Row 3 - Blocks 7, 8, 9

Step 2 - Inner Border Sew one 1 1/2" x 11 1/2" Fabric B strip to each side of Block 1, press seams towards the border. Sew one 1 1/2" x 13 1/2" Fabric B strip to top and bottom edges, press seams towards the border. Replace bordered panel square in layout.

Step 3 - Repeat Step 2 for all 9 blocks.

Step 4 - Fabric C Border Sew one 3" x 13 1/2" strip to each side of Block 1, press seams towards the border. Sew one 3" x 18 1/2" strip to top and bottom edges, press seams towards the border.

Step 5 - Repeat Step 4 for Blocks 3, 5, 7 and 9.

Step 6 - Fabric D Border Sew one 3" x 13 1/2" strip to each side of Block 2, press seams towards the border. Sew one 3" x 18 1/2" strip to top and bottom edges, press seams towards the border.

Step 7 - Repeat Step 4 for Blocks 4, 6 and 8.

Step 8 - Fabric E Corner Triangles Take the 36 Fabric E 5 1/2" squares and rule a line across the diagonal on the wrong side of each. With Block 1 right side up place a square right side down in one corner and sew along the line. Trim seam to 1/4" and press triangle towards the seam. Repeat for remaining 3 corners.

Step 9 - Repeat Step 8 for Blocks 2 - 9.


Quilt Top

Step 10 - Sew together the 3 blocks in each row. Press seams in one direction alternating the direction in each row.

Step 11 - Sew the rows together matching seams. Press seams in one direction.

Step 12 - Outer Border Cut selvedges from 2 1/2" Fabric F strips. Cut 2 of the strips in half and sew one half to one end of each of the remaining 4 strips. Sew one strip to each side of the quilt top, press seams towards border and trim off excess fabric. Sew remaining strips to top and bottom edges, press seams towards border and trim off excess fabric.

Step 13 - Layer the backing, batting and quilt top and baste together. Quilt as desired.

Step 14 - Join the 6 x 2 1/2" binding strips on the bias to make one long strip. Press in half lengthwise and bind mitering corners. Attach a label or sign and date your quilt.
