HEART QUILT

WHAT YOU'LL NEED:
- Fabrics are from 'Hearts Collection' :-
- 80cm Fabric A - Çandy Hearts
- 1.1m Fabric B - I Love You (includes binding)
- 60cm Fabric C - Mini Hearts
- 60cm Fabric D - Love Heart
- 70cm Fabric E - Sketch Hearts (includes borders)
- 2.2m Fabric F - Prima Homespun, white
- 1.8m x 250cm wide Prima Homespun Backing fabric, white
- 1.8m Sew Easy cotton/bamboo batting
- Matching Gutermann 100% cotton thread
- Rotary cutter, mat & quilters rulers
- Quilting pins, tape measure
- Scissors, seam ripper
- Hand needle

- Sewing machine with 1/4" foot & walking foot
Note: All fabrics should be 100% cotton, washed & pressed. 1/4" seam allowance used throughout unless otherwise indicated. Read all instructions carefully before commencing the quilt.
INSTRUCTIONS
CUTTING
All strips are cut across the width of fabric unless otherwise stated.
- FromFabric A cut 2 x 5" strips, crosscut strips into 10 x 5" squares for heart blocks 3 x 5 3/8" strips, crosscut strips into 19 x 5 3/8" squares then cut each square once on the diagonal to make 38 half-square triangles - 10 for heart blocks, 28 for chevron blocks.
- FromFabric B cut 1 x 5" strip, crosscut strip into 8 x 5" squares for heart blocks 3 x 5 3/8" strips, crosscut strips into 19 x 5 3/8" squares then cut each square once on the diagonal to make 38 half-square triangles - 10 for heart blocks, 28 for chevron blocks 7 x 2 1/2" strips for binding.
- FromFabrics C & D cut 1 x 5" strip, crosscut strip into 8 x 5" squares for heart blocks 3 x 5 3/8" strips, crosscut strips into 19 x 5 3/8" squares then cut each square once on the diagonal to make 38 half-square triangles - 10 for heart blocks, 28 for chevron blocks.
- FromFabric E cut 1 x 5" strip, crosscut strip into 8 x 5" squares for heart blocks 1 x 5 3/8" strip, crosscut strip into 4 x 5 3/8" squares then cut each square once on the diagonal to make 8 half-square triangles for heart blocks 4 x 3 1/2" strips for top and bottom borders.
- FromFabric F, white homespun, cut 6 x 2 1/2" strips, crosscut strips into 84 x 2 1/2" squares for heart blocks 11 x 5 3/8" strips, crosscut strips into 77 x 5 3/8" squares then cut each square once on the diagonal to make 154 half-square triangles - 42 for heart blocks, 112 for chevron blocks 4 x 2" strips for top and bottom borders.
HEART BLOCKS
Step 1. On the wrong side of Fabric F white 2 1/2" squares draw a diagonal line connecting opposite corners.
Step 2. Place one 2 1/2" square on the top left corner of a 5" Fabric A square with right sides facing. Sew along the diagonal line from upper right to bottom left, Diagram 1. Trim corner 1/4" from stitching, flip open triangle and press.
Step 3. Place another 2 1/2" square on the top right corner and sew along the diagonal line from upper left to bottom right, Diagram 2. Trim corner 1/4" from stitching, flip open triangle and press. Diagram 3. Repeat steps 2 and 3 using 5" squares of Fabrics A, B, C, D and E to make a total of 42 blocks.
Step 4. Matching seams pin and sew together the two Fabric A blocks to complete the top section a heart block, Diagram 4. Press seam open. Repeat to make 5 Fabric A top sections and 4 top sections each of Fabrics B, C, D and E.
Step 5. For the bottom section of the heart blocks select the following half-square triangles - 10 Fabric A, 8 each Fabrics B, C, D and E and 42 Fabric F (white homespun). Sew one white Fabric F half-square triangle to each Fabric A, B, C, D and E half-square triangle to make a total of 10 Fabric A units and 8 units each of Fabrics B, C, D and E. Press seams towards white.
Step 6. Pin and sew together two Fabric A half-square triangle units as in Diagram 5. Press seam open. Repeat using remaining Fabric A, B, C, D and E half-square triangle units to make 5 Fabric A bottom sections and 4 bottom sections each of Fabrics B, C, D and E.
Step 7. To complete the heart block, pin together one Fabric A top section to a Fabric A bottom section matching seams. Sew together and press seam open, Diagram 6. Repeat to make a total of 21 hearts - 5 Fabric A and 4 each of Fabrics B, C, D and E.
HEART ROWS
Step 8. Arrange heart blocks into 3 rows with 7 hearts in each row. When happy with the arrangement pin and sew blocks together in each row matching seams. Press all seams in one direction.
CHEVRON BLOCKS
Step 9. Sew remaining 112 white Fabric F half-square triangle to remaining Fabric A, B, C, and D half-square triangles. Press seams towards white.
Step 10. Pin and sew together two Fabric A half-square triangle units as in Diagram 7 to make the top section of the chevron block. Press seam open. Pin and sew together two Fabric A half-square triangle units as in Diagram 8 to make the bottom section of the chevron block. Press seam open.
Step 11. To complete the chevron block, pin together one Fabric A top section to a Fabric A bottom section matching seams. Sew together and press seam open, Diagram 9. Repeat to make a total of 7 Fabric A chevron blocks.
CHEVRON ROWS
Step 12. Pin the 7 chevron blocks in a row, matching seams and sew together. Press seams in the opposite direction to the heart blocks. Repeat steps 10-12 using the Fabric B, C, and D half-square triangle units.
QUILT TOP
Step 13. Arrange the rows as desired, alternating the chevron and heart rows, beginning and ending with a chevron row. Sew the rows together matching seams. Press seams in one direction.
BORDERS
Step 14. Trim selvedges from the 2" Fabric F Border strips and sew two strips together end to end. Press seam open and sew strip to the bottom edge of the quilt top. Repeat for the remaining two strips and sew to top edge. Press seams towards border and trim off any excess fabric.
Step 15. Trim selvedges from the 3 1/2" Fabric E Border strips and sew two strips together end to end. Press seam open and sew strip to the bottom edge of the quilt top. Repeat for the remaining two strips and sew to top edge. Press seams towards border and trim off any excess fabric.
TO FINISH
Step 16. Layer the backing, batting and quilt top and baste together. Quilt as desired.
Step 17. Join the 7 x 2 1/2" binding strips together on the bias to make one long strip. Press in half lengthwise and bind mitering corners. Attach a label or sign and date your quilt.
