Blankie Bomber Jacket Project

Level: Intermediate

What you'll need:

  • Moda Vera Blankie 300g x 3 (4) balls Main Colour (M) and 1 ball Contrast Colour (C).
  • 1 pair each 7 mm and 8 mm knitting needles and 1 spare 8mm knitting needle, or sizes required to give correct tension.
  • 1 stitch-holder.
  • Scissors, yarn needle, tape measure.

Sleeve Length: 45 cm

Tension

7 sts and 11 rows to 10 cm over stocking st, using 8 mm needles.

Instructions

Back

Using 7 mm needles and C, cast on 39 (45) sts.

Beg rib - 1st row (RS) - K1, P1, K1, rep from to end.

2nd row - P1, K1, P1, rep from to end.

Rep 1st and 2nd rows until work measures 5cm from beg, ending with a 2nd row.

Break off C.

Change to 8 mm needles.

Using M for rem, Next row - Knit.

Beg double moss st - 1st row - P1, K1, P1, rep from to end.

2nd row - K1, P1, K1, rep from to end.

3rd row - K1, P1, K1, rep from to end.

4th row - P1, K1, P1, rep from to end.

Rows 1 to 4 incl form double moss st.

Cont in double moss st until work measures 29cm from beg, working last row on WS.

Tie a coloured thread at each end of last row to mark beg of armholes as there is no armhole shaping.

Cont in double moss st until work measures 23 (25) cm from coloured threads, working last row on WS.

Shape Shoulders - Cast off 13 (16) sts at beg of next 2 rows.

Cast off rem 13 sts.


Left Front

Using 7 mm needles and C, cast on 21 (23) sts.

Beg rib - Work 5 cm in rib as for lower band of Back, ending with a 2nd row.
Break off C.

Change to 8 mm needles.

Using M for rem, Next row - Knit.

Beg double moss st - Work 4 cm in double moss st as for Back, working last row on WS.

Beg Pocket Opening - Next row - Moss 11 (13), slip rem sts on a stitch-holder, turn, cast on 10 sts for pocket lining.

Cont in double moss st on these 21 (23) sts for 16 cm from beg of pocket opening, working last row on RS.

Next row (WS) - Cast off 10 sts, moss to end. Leave sts on needle. Do not break off yarn.

Return to 10 sts left on stitch-holder and slip these sts to spare 8 mm needle.

Using a new ball of M and with RS facing, work in moss st for 16 cm (same amount of rows as for lining), working last row on WS. Break off yarn.

Next row - With RS facing, moss across 11 (13) sts on original needle, then 10 sts on the spare needle … 21 (23) sts.

Cont in moss st until work measures same as Back to beg of coloured threads, ending with same row on WS.

Tie a coloured thread at end of last row to mark beg of armhole.

Cont in moss st until work measures 15 (17) cm from coloured threads, working last row on WS.

Shape Neck - Next row (RS) - Moss to last 2 sts, moss 2tog.

Next row - Moss 2tog, moss to end.

Rep last 2 rows until 13 (16) sts rem, ending with a dec row.

Work 0 (1) row/s. Cast off rem 13 (16) sts for shoulder.


Right Front

Work as for Left Front to .

Beg Pocket Opening - Next row - Moss 10, slip rem sts on a stitch-holder, turn.

Cont in moss st on these 11 (13) sts for 16 cm, working last row on WS.

Leave sts on needle. Do not break off yarn.

Return to 11 (13) sts on stitch-holder and slip these to spare 8 mm needle.

Using a new ball of M and with RS facing, cast on 10 sts for pocket lining onto the spare needle, moss to end.

Cont in moss st on these 21 (23) sts for 16 cm (same amount of rows as before), working last row on RS.

Next row (WS) - Moss 11 (13), cast off rem 10 sts. Break off yarn.

Next row - With RS facing, moss across 10 sts on original needle, then moss 11 (13) sts on spare needle … 21 (23) sts.

Cont in moss st until work measures same as Back to beg of coloured threads, ending with same row on WS.

Tie a coloured thread at beg of last row to mark beg of armhole.

Cont in moss st until work measures 15 (17) cm from coloured threads, working last row on WS.

Shape Neck - Next row (RS) - Moss 2tog, moss to end.

Next row - Moss to last 2 sts, moss 2tog.

Rep last 2 rows until 13 (16) sts rem, ending with a dec row.

Work 0 (1) row/s. Cast off rem 13 (16) sts for shoulder.


Sleeves

Using 7 mm needles and C, cast on 17 (19) sts.

Beg rib - Work 5cm in rib as for lower band of Back, ending with a 2nd row.

Next row - K1, inc once knitways in each of next 16 sts, K0 (2) … 33 (35) sts.

Break off C.

Change to 8 mm needles.

Using M for rem, Next row - Knit.

Beg double moss st - Work in double moss st as for Back, beg with a 2nd row until work measures 45 cm from beg, working last row on WS.

Cast off loosely.


Neckband

Using 7 mm needle and C, cast on 31 sts.

Beg rib - Work 2 rows rib as for lower band of Back.

Keeping rib correct, cast off 8 sts at beg of next 2 rows.

Cast off rem 15 sts loosely.


Finishing

DO NOT PRESS. Using a flat seam for all seams, join shoulder seams.

Sew in sleeves evenly between coloured threads, placing centre of sleeves to shoulder seams. Join side and sleeve seams. Slip stitch neatly pocket linings in position. Neatly slip stitch neckband in position.
