W.C. - Working Cords, term given to cords to make knots.
F.C. - Filler Cords, term given to cords that knots are made around.
Step 1: Cut 4 Lengths 5 metres long.
Step 2: Group these 4 cords together, find the midway point and work 3 S.K on either side of midway point. 6 S.K.in total.
Step 3: Fold in half and place a 38mm ring over the top and sit below the last knots on each side.
Step 4: Attach the cord to the ring using a H.S.H.H knot.
Step 5: Cut 4 Lengths 5 metres long.
Step 6: Fold lengths in half and attach 2 each side of the knots, using a reverse L.H. knot. 16 W.C. in total.
Step 7: Take 2 cords and work 5 alternating V.D.H.H. knots starting with the knot worked to the left.
Step 8: Repeat for remaining cords. 8 sets in all.
Step 9: Place the 75mm ring over the top and sit below the last knots worked.
Step 10: Attach the cord to the ring using a H.S.H.H knot.
Step 11: Cut 8 Lengths 3.5 metres long.
Step 12: Fold lengths in half and attach 8 new cords in between each existing set, using a reverse L.H. knot. 32 W.C. in total.
Step 13: Take 2 cords(ensuring one is from and the new set and one from the old set) and work 5 alternating V.D.H.H. knots starting with the knot worked to the right.
Step 14: Repeat for remaining cords. 16 sets in all.
Step 15: Place the 20mm ring over the top and sit below the last knots worked.
Step 16: Attach the cord to the ring using a H.S.H.H knot.
Step 17: Cut 16 Lengths 3 metres long.
Step 18: Fold lengths in half and attach 16 new cords in between each existing set, using a reverse L.H. knot. 64 W.C. in total.
Step 19: Take 2 cords(ensuring one is from and the new set and one from the old set) and work 5 alternating V.D.H.H. knots starting with the knot worked to the left.
Step 20: Repeat for remaining cords. 32 sets in all.
Step 21: Place a 300mm ring over the top and sit below the last knots worked.
Step 22: Attach the cord to the ring using a H.S.H.H knot.
Step 23: Cut 32 Lengths 2.4 metres long.
Step 24: Fold lengths in half and attach 32 new cords in between each existing set, using a reverse L.H. knot. 128 W.C. in total.
Step 25: Take 4 cords(1 from the old, 2 new and 1 old) and work a S.K. Continue around the frame.
Step 26: Work one more row of S.K. alternating.
Note: Up until now, attaching a ring has been with single half hitch, then the knots in the next section keep these from slipping. The pattern now shifts and double will be incorporated but not on every stitch due to the bulky nature of the cord used.
Step 27: Place a 300mm ring over the top or the cords (from underneath) to sit below the last knots worked.
Step 28: Attach the cord to the ring using a H.S.H.H knot. Repeat for 3 cords then a H.D.H.H on the last cord of each S.K.
Step 29: Work is divided into 8 equal parts of 16, group by following down from the S.K. above to keep symmetrical. Take the 8th as a F.C. and lay on a diagonal across W.C. 1-7 (about 5cms down). With cord 7 work a D.D.H.H.L, with cord 6 work a D.S.H.H.L. alternate from double to single to cord 1.
Step 30: Take the 9th as a F.C. and lay on a diagonal across cords W.C.10-16 (about 5cms down). With cord 10 work a D.D.H.H.R, with cord 11 work a D.S.H.H.L. alternate from double to single to cord 16.
Step 31: With centre 4 cords work a S.K. With centre 6 cords work a S.K. with outer W.C. forming the knot and the centre 4 as F.C. With centre 4 cords for another S.K.
Step 32: Repeat around shade with each group of 16 cords.
Step 33: Cross over the F.C. at the intersection of each group. This now forms new groups of 16.
Step 34: Close each shape to form a diamond by laying the 1st cord diagonally across cords 2-8, With cord 2 work a D.D.H.H.R, with cord 3 work a D.S.H.H.R, alternate from double to single to cord 8.
Step 35: Lay cord 16 diagonally to the left across cords 9-15, With cord 15 work a D.D.H.H.L, with cord 14 work a D.S.H.H.R, alternate from double to single to cord 9.
Step 36: Place a 300mm ring over the top or the cords (from underneath) to sit below the last knots worked.
Step 37: Attach the cord to the ring using a H.S.H.H knot. Repeat for 3 cords then a H.D.H.H on the 4th cord, repeat around the ring.
Step 38: Following down from the diamond shapes above, leave the 4 cords centred over the point free from knots. Work 3 S.K. over next 12 cords. Repeat around shade.
Step 39: Work in alternating S.K to a point, therefore next row will be 2 S.K. below each set of 3, then 1 S.K. below each set of 2. 8 points in all.
Finishing
Step 40: Working with groups of 8 cords, where the points form 8 with the middle cords, and the 2 outer cords are grouped with the 4 free cords. Tie O.K. as follows: leave centre 4 cords loose, take 4 outer (2 from each side) and work and O.K. around the 4 cords by taking all cords through the middle of the O.K. tighten either close to the ring or just below the S.K.s
Step 41: Trim cords to be 20cms below the O.K. on the S.K point. And 15cms on the O.K. only group.
Hanging Cord (finished length approx. 150cms)
Step 42: Hanging Cord, Cut 2 lengths at 10 metres, and 1 at 3.3 metres.
Step 43: Fold 2 long cords with so 1 side is 8.3 metres and 1 side is 1.7 metres. Attached to the ring using an O.K. ensuring long length is to the outside. Fold short cord in half and attach in the centre of there 2 cords.
Step 44: Working a S.K. only with outer long cords as W.C. and middle cords as F.C. continue to end, work will twist as more knots are made.
Step 45: Tie off the end with an O.K to secure. Trim ends.
