CHRISTMAS TABLE RUNNER

Christmas Table Runner Project

Level: Beginner

What you'll need:

  • Fabric (about 1-2 metres depending on your table size)
  • Scissors or rotary cutter
  • Measuring tape or ruler
  • Pins
  • Thread
  • Sewing machine or needle for hand-sewing
  • Iron and ironing board

Instructions

Step 1: Measure the Table

  • Measure the length of your table.
  • For a standard table runner that extends over the ends of your table, you will want to add an extra 20 to 30 cm to your table length measurement. For a table runner that doesn't extend over the ends, you will cut the fabric to your preferred length.
  • Width: Table runners are typically narrower than the table width, so a width of around 20 to 30 cm works well, depending on your preference.
  • Add 2 cm to all dimensions for seam allowance.

Step 2: Cut the Fabric

  • Lay your fabric out flat.
  • Cut x2 pieces of fabric using your measurements from Step 1.

Step 3: Prepare the Fabric for Sewing

Place the two pieces of fabric with right sides together (the sides you want showing) and pin them together.

Step 4 : Sew

Sew around the edges, using a 2 cm seam allowance, leaving a gap of about 10 to 15 cm to turn the fabric right way round. Backstitch at the beginning and end to secure.

Step 5: Turn and Press

Turn the runner right-side out through the opening you left during sewing. Use a pointy tool like a chopstick to poke the corners out neatly. Press the table runner flat, ensuring the edges are crisp.

Step 6: Topstitch

Sew around the edges of your runner about 1 cm from the edge for a professional finish. This will also close the opening you left for turning.

Alternatively, you can hand stitch the opening closed using a blind (ladder) stitch.

Step 8: Final Press

Give your table runner a final press with the iron to smooth any wrinkles.

Your table runner is now complete and ready to use!
