DIY HOMESPUN BOOK BAG

Level: Beginner
What you'll need:
- Woven Cotton Fabric - Quilting Cotton or Canvas
- Interfacing (Optional for lighter fabrics)
- 3 m Simplicity Cord
- Matching Thread
- Scissors
- Pin
- Sewing Machine
Instructions
Reference the downloadable project sheet for project pattern diagrams.
- Cut the fabric
Body of Bag: 2 x 35 cm wide x 44 cm long
Lining: 2 x 35 cm wide x 44 cm
Keepers: 2 x 4 x 10 cm - Optional: Add fusing to 2 x same size as Body of Bag, apply to wrong side of fabric
- Fold the keeper in half, right sides together and stitch into a tube then pull - through and press
- Fold the keepers over to form a loop. Attach these to the right side 4 cm from the bottom of one of the larger rectangles (loops facing into the center, seam allowance sitting on top of each other)
- Place the right sides together of the body the bag, stitch the bottom closed
- Stitch the side seams of the bag closed, leaving a 4 cm gap, 2 cm from the top of the bag
- Press side seams open
- Repeat the same for the lining, stitch closed bottom of the bag and side seams on the lining, also leaving the hole and press open
- Place the lining inside the outer shell, the wrong sides will face each other
- Line up the openings in the side seam and stitch around to secure them together
- Fold the top over 1 cm then 3 cm, the opening will sit at the top of the bag
- Cut the cord in half, thread the cord through the top and back to where it started, put one end through the keeper and knot it off, repeat from the opposite side so that when you pull from each side the bag will pull closed
