Throws vs Bed Blankets: What's The Difference?

The terms blankets, throws, bed blankets and bed throws are all used interchangeably, there are subtle differences in their function or use. Broadly speaking, blankets are designed to add warmth to your bed, and are layered on top of your other bedding for extra insulation. Throws are designed with decoration in mind, and may feature a more lightweight construction or be made from materials such as cotton or linen. Both can be used to layer up your bed and add a decorative element. If you're after extra warmth, look for throw blankets made from fleece, faux fur or wool.

How to style a throw blanket

Bed throw blankets are called throws for a reason - they look best when they're casually draped or 'thrown' rather than fastidiously placed. Placing your throw or blanket in a triangular shape at the corner of the bed can look very stylish. If you'd prefer to fold your knitted throw, then positioning it diagonally on the bottom of your bed will show it off nicely.

You can absolutely make a decorative throw the star of your bedding and bedlinen. If your throw is fanciful and decorative, you might like to make a feature out of it. Or conversely, you could use it to jazz up plain bedding. Start with a neutral bedspread and then lay the throw blanket in full across the top. This creates an expansive effect and can also make a small throw rug appear bigger.

What size are throws & blankets?

Unlike other bed linen or bedding, there are no standard sizes when it comes to blankets and throws. Common sizes you may come across are "king/queen" (230cm x 250cm) and "single/double" (190cm x 220cm). Keep in mind that throws and blankets are generally not intended to cover your bed completely, but instead prove an additional decorative layer.

What are the benefits of using a weighted blanket?

Weighted blankets are heavier than standard bed quilts or comforters, and are designed to encourage a sense of calmness and relief. The weight uses deep touch pressure to help you relax and enhance deeper sleep.

Top tip: The recommended size/weight for weighted blankets should be 10% of your body weight.
