Instructions

Reference the downloadable project sheet for project pattern diagrams.

Step 1 - Materials: Pebeo Preparer and Deglazer, clean cloth.

In a well-ventilated area, prepare areas of the shoes that will have paint applied to them by rubbing the Preparer and Deglazer solution on them using a clean cloth. Allow to dry before proceeding to step 2.

Step 2 - Materials: Pencil, masking tape.

Draw design on shoes using a pencil. Example designs are provided to copy or create your own design. As shown, apply masking tape to block out and protect areas of the shoes that you won't be painting on. You may also wish to block out areas that you are not initially painting, to protect these too.

Step 3 - Pebeo Setacolour Leather Colours: Intense Red, Vivid Yellow, Pure White.

On a palette, mix together yellow, red and white to create different tints of coral, orange, peach and peachy-pink. Apply paint to the coral shape drawn on the back of the shoes. Allow paint to dry before adding darker or lighter tints over any base colour put down.

Step 4 - Colours: Intense Red, Vivid Yellow, Pure White.

Lighten a coral colour as used in Step 3, adding more white to it to create a light peach/coral colour for the background. Use this mix to paint in the area at the front of the shoes as shown. Once dry, you may like to apply a second coat for even coverage.

Step 5 - Colours: Ocean Blue, Vivid Yellow, Pure White.

Mix a lightened Turquoise green using yellow, blue and white. Use this mix to paint in some of the simpler seaweed shapes amongst the already-painted coral at the back of the shoe. A bluer version of this turquoise can be achieved by adding more blue. Fill in some of the other simple seaweed shapes at the back of the shoe as shown, so that there is an interspersion of turquoise.

As these dry, deepen the colour mixes by adding more blue and yellow as required and use to paint in some darker areas to create tonal variation.

Mix a darker green colour using yellow and blue. A little white can be added if desired. Use to paint in the remaining simple seaweed shapes. On the example shoes, the darker green seaweed is featured closer to the outer Nike tick, and the lighter bluer and turquoise colours are used toward the back and inner side of the shoes, so that there is more contrast between the background colour of the tick (once this is painted) and the seaweed on the outer side of the shoe.

Step 6 - Materials: masking tape

Once the previously painted areas are completely dry, place masking tape around the tick icon on the outer facing side of each shoe, so that surrounding areas are protected from paint getting on them while painting that area.

Step 7 - Colours: Ocean Blue, Intense Red, Pure White.

Mix blue, red and white together to create a muted violet purple colour and use to paint in the more complex shaped coral on the tick. As this dries, a lighter version (created by adding more white) of this colour mix can be applied in places over the top to create lighter areas as shown.

Step 8 - Colours: Ocean Blue, Intense Red, Pure White.

Create a grey-blue by mixing blue and white with a little red. Use to fill in the simple shaped seaweed on the tick. Add more blue and white to the mix to create lighter versions and colour variations on the seaweed as shown.

Step 9 - Colours: Ocean Blue, Vivid Yellow, Pure White.

Create a light aquamarine colour by mixing blue, yellow and white. Use this mix to fill in around the coral and seaweed in the background area of the tick but keeping within the stitching as shown.

Step 10 - Colours: Ocean Blue, Vivid Yellow, Pure White: (repeated mix from step 9).

Ensure the front section of the shoes are dry and then use the same mix from step 9 to paint a base colour within the seaweed shapes on the front section of the shoes as shown.

Step 11 - Colours: Intense Red, Vivid Yellow, Pure White.

Create coral and orange colour mixes similar to those used for the more complex coral shapes in step 3. Use these to paint the more complex coral shapes on the front of the shoes as shown. As they dry different mixes can be applied in places as desired on top of the base colour to create some darker/lighter areas.

Step 12 - Colours: Ocean Blue, Vivid Yellow, Pure White.

Create a darker green colour using blue, yellow and a little white as required, Use this mix to paint in some darker detail on the aquamarine-painted seaweed on the front of the shoes as shown.

Step 13 - Colours: Ocean Blue, Vivid Yellow, Pure White.

Add more blue and white to the colour created in step 12 (or create fresh mix) to create a lighter and bluer version that can be painted in parts of the seaweed on the front of the shoes as shown. Add additional simple seaweed strands close to the toe of the shoe.

Blue can be added as needed to create a muted grey-blue to add detail to the seaweed featured on the tick as shown. These colours can also be used to add a few dots over the top of the coral/orange-coloured complex corals on the front of the shoes. Other dots will be added later in different colours.

Step 14 - Colours: Ocean Blue, Vivid Yellow, Pure White.

Mix blue, yellow and white together to create a light turquoise and add more dots to the orange/coral complex shaped coral on the front of the shoes as shown.

Step 15 - Colours: Ocean Blue, Intense Red, Pure White.

Mix blue and red (add a small amount of white if desired) to create a dark violet purple. Use this to paint in the outer rim of the raised tick from the stitching to the edge. Also use to thinly outline the violet-purple coral shapes on the tick as shown.

Step 16 - Colours: Ocean Blue, Vivid Yellow, Pure White.

Peel away any tape that is covering the back panel, but keeping the tape in other areas around it. Ensure the tick is dry and protect both ticks by covering with masking tape in preparation for painting the background of the panel around them. You can also put masking tape over the centre strip at the back of the shoe and over the top area where the stitched writing is featured to ensure these areas are also kept clean.

Create a light lime green colour by mixing together a higher ratio of yellow to blue, and adding white to lighten. Use this colour to paint in the back side panels on both sides of the shoes in around the coral and seaweed as shown. Once dry you may find a second coat is desirable.

Step 17 - Once all paint is dry, peel away the masking tape to reveal your completed shoes.
