FLOWER FAIRIES FAIRY WINGS

Instructions

Read all instructions carefully before commencing the project. Reference the downloadable project sheet for project pattern diagrams.

Step 1 - Cutting Place wing template provided onto non-fusible side of interfacing and trace around the edge. Cut out around edge 2 cm from the line. Press Fabric A and place interfacing wings fusible side down onto wrong side and fuse to fabric. Carefully cut out wings along the line. Repeat using Fabric B. You now have 2 wings one outer (Fabric A) and one inner (Fabric B).

Step 2 - Take outer wing piece (Fabric A), fold in half down the centre and matching all edges finger press the fold. Cut in half along the crease to create two wing pieces. DO NOT CUT inner wing piece.

Step 3 - Applique Shapes Cut out the 3 applique templates. Trace 2 of each template onto the paper side of fusible web.

Step 4 - Take the 2 largest of the fusible web shapes and place one at a time fusible side down onto the wrong side Fabric C to cover a fairy. Check placement keeping in mind how the fairy will look when on the wing (refer to image), then fuse to fabric. Cut out shape leaving 2 cm extra around the edge. Repeat for the second of largest shape again considering how fairy will look when on the wing.

Step 5 - Repeat Step 4 using the two smallest shapes on Fabric D then the remaining two shapes on Fabric D.

Step 6 - Cut out all shapes along the lines. Remove backing paper and place shapes on the two outer wing pieces. When happy with placement fuse in place.

Step 7 - Sewing With cotton batting on the table, place inner wing on top fabric side facing up. Place outer wings on top with fabric side down (wings are right sides together). Match all edges with straight cut centre edges of outer wings just touching but not overlapping. Use clips to hold all layers together around the outside edge.

Step 8 - Stitch together all around the outside of the wings 3/8" (1 cm) from the edge, backstitching at top and bottom where cut edges of outer wings meet. Carefully trim seam allowance to 1/8" (3 mm) and snip into the point on each wing but do not cut stitching.

Step 9 - Working on one side at a time carefully turn wings right side out through the opening in the middle of the outer wings.

Tip - Start by turning out the bottom half then the top half. This will take time due to the stiffness of interfacing and thickness of batting. If any applique shapes come loose they can be re-fused when wings are right side out.

Step 10 - Topstitch Use your fingers and end of the chopstick to push out inside of the seams. Place wings on ironing board with applique side down and press wings so they sit flat. Topstitch around the edge.

Step 11 - Applique Use a dry iron re-fuse any loose applique shapes. Using a zigzag stitch sew around the edge of each applique shape.

Step 12 - To Finish Fold wings in half with outer sides together, with the opening and applique on the inside. Using a long stitch sew down the length of the fold 1/2" (13 mm) from the edge. Repeat stitching twice more over the first line of stitching.

Step 13 - Straps From Fabric F cut 2 x 2 1/2" strips across the width of the fabric. Cut into 2 x 26 1/2" lengths. Fold each strip in half lengthways and using 1/4" seam allowance sew lengthways down each strip. Turn strips right side out and press.

Step 14 - Cut 2 x 17 1/2"(45 cm) lengths of elastic. Thread elastic through strap pinning end of elastic 1/2" (13 mm) from end of fabric strap. Topstitch 3mm in from end of elastic. Fold raw end of strap to back and topstitch through elastic and all layers of fabric. Repeat at the other end. Make second strap in same way.

Step 15 -To attach straps place wings applique side down and mark 3/8" (1 cm) from centre spine and 1" (2.5 cm) from top/bottom edge. Push fabric towards centre of straps away from ends. Place one flat end of strap at marks and topstitch to wing. Repeat for other end of the strap then attach ends of remaining strap in the same way.
