Do you have any tips for making handbags?

Each of our patterns features detailed and easy to follow step by step instructions, and we recommend that you read this fully before beginning. If you are new to creating your very own bags, check out some of our handy tips below.

Fabric- Each of our sewing patterns will recommend one or several different types of fabric. You can change this to suit your needs, however, do not choose material that is much lighter as you will lose the structure of the bag and one that is too heavy may not feed through your machine.

If you are choosing your own fabric, we recommend that you pick one that is heavier, such as duck cotton or upholstery fabric, as this will be sturdier and more robust.

Interfacing: If your bag design is a little bit too floppy and you were hoping for something thicker, you could always use interfacing to stiffen the fabric and provide structure. This is also seen as an essential component if you are making fabric handles. Check out our selection of interfacing here.

Lining: Using lining inside your handcrafted handbag will make it stronger and hide messy seams and needlework, resulting in a more professional finish. Give a classic black number a burst of vibrancy with a pillar box red lining that will provide a flash of colour. Adding lining to your bag also means that you can add pockets and organisers to keep your important belongings organised and at hand.

Stitch and stitch again: Consider the areas of your bag that may be prone to wear and tear, backstitching here will help to give your new clutch a longer life expectancy.

Walking Foot: Use a walking foot when you are sewing multiple layers of fabric, particularly if you are applying topstitching around the top.
