HALLOWEEN QUILT
Level: Intermediate
What you'll need:
- 2 m Background fabric
- 0.5 to 1m of 12 Assorted Halloween fabrics
- 60 cm Binding fabric
- 2 m Backing fabric
- 2 m Cotton/polyester batting
- Matching Gutterman 100% cotton thread
- Rotary cutter, mat & quilters ruler
- Quilting pins, tape measure
- Scissors, seam ripper
- Hand sewing needle
- Sewing machine & walking foot
- Marking pen
- Templastic
All fabric should be 100% cotton, washed, and pressed. Use a 1/4" seam allowance throughout unless indicated otherwise. Please read all instructions carefully before starting the quilt.

Templates
Print the template pages using a ruler to ensure that the 1" line on each page matches the 1" mark on your ruler.
Using your templastic trace the Hat Guide Template A and B shapes and cut out.
Reference the downloadable project sheet for project pattern diagrams.
Cutting
Witches Hats
For each block, cut the following:
Fabric A (hat)
- 4 x 1" x 2.5" strips (Piece Aa)
- 1 x 1" x 6.75" strips (Piece Ab)
- 1 x 1.5" x 10" strip (Piece Ac)
- 1 x 1.5" x 4.5" strip (Piece Ad)
- 1 x Template A
Fabric B (belt)
- 1 x 1.25" x 1.25" square (Piece Ba)
- 2 x 1.25" x 2.25" strips (Piece Bb)
Fabric C (buckle)
- 2 x 1.25" x 1.25" squares (Piece Ca)

Cut 6 strips across WOF 2.5" wide.
Sewing Instructions
Witches Hat
Step 1 - Referring to Diagram 1 gather the belt and buckle pieces. With right sides facing, pin and sew in the following order:
- Row 1 - 1 Piece Aa, 1 Piece Cb, 1 Piece Aa
- Row 2 - 1 Piece Bb, 1 Piece Ca, Piece Ba, 1 Piece Ca, 1 Piece Bb
- Row 3 - 1 Piece Aa, 1 Piece Cb, 1 Piece Aa
Press seams to one side.
Step 2 - Referring to Diagram 1, with right sides together, sew Row 1 to Row 2 and Row 2 to Row 3, ensuring seam joins match to highlight the buckle shape. Press seams to one side. The belt/buckle section is now complete.
Step 3 - With right sides facing, centre and sew the bottom (widest part) of Template A piece, to the belt/buckle section. Press seams to one side.
Step 4 - With right sides facing, centre and sew Piece Ab to hat section (widest part). Press seams to one side.
Step 5 - Place your sewn piece onto the cutting mat. Sit the Hat Guide template on top and trim your fabric to the Hat Guide shape.
Step 6 - Join Template B and Template B Reverse to the hat. Press seams to one side.
Step 7 - Following Diagram 2 create the following two rows:
- Piece Dc, Piece Ad, Piece De (Hat tip)
- 1 Piece Db, Piece Ac, 1 Piece Db (Hat Brim)
Step 8 - With right sides facing sew the hat tip row to the top section of the hat. Press seams to one side.
Step 9 - With right sides facing sew the hat brim row to the bottom section of the hat. Press seams to one side.
Step 10 - Sew 1 Piece Da to the top and bottom of the hat. Press seams to one side. Your witches hat block is now complete. Repeat Steps 1 through to 8 for each of the hat blocks (5 blocks in total).
Pumpkins
Step 1 - Gather the 2 Piece Ga and 4 Piece Dz.
Step 2 - Following Diagram 3 and with right sides facing, sew a Piece Dz to each end of the Piece Ga. Trim seam allowance back to 1/4" and press seams to one side.
Step 3 - Following Diagram 3, sew the strips together:
- 1 Piece Dw, 1 Piece Ga, 1 Piece Fa, 1 piece Ea, 1 Piece Fa, 1 Piece Ga, 1 Piece Dw
Press seams to one side.
Step 4 - Gather the Piece Ha, Piece Dy and Dx strips and following Diagram 3 sew two rows as the same as follows:
- 1 Piece Dx, 1 piece Ha, 1 piece Dy
Trim seam allowance back to 1/4" and press seams to one side.
Step 5 - With right sides together sew the two stalk rows together. Press seams to one side.
Step 6 - With right sides together sew the stalk rows to the pumpkin. Press seams to one side.
Step 7 - With right sides together sew one Piece Dv to each end of the pumpkin. Press seams to one side. The pumpkin block is now complete. Repeat Steps 1 through 7 for each of the pumpkin blocks (4 blocks in total).
Joining blocks together
Step 1 - Following the Layout Diagram, sew a 2.5" x 12.5" sashing strip to the right side of each block. Press seams to one side.
Step 2 - Sew the left side of the blocks to the sashing strips to create 3 rows. Press all seams.
Step 3 - Following the layout diagram, sew a 2.5" square to 4 of the remaining 2.5" x 12.5" squares. Press seams to one side.
Step 4 - Sew a 2.5" x 12.5" strip to the other side of the square. Press seams to one side. The internal two long rows are now created.
Step 5 - Following the layout diagram and with right sides together, sew an internal row to the bottom of each of the first two rows. Press seams to one side.
Step 6 - Following the layout diagram and with right sides together, sew the rows together.
Step 7 - Sew a border strip to the top and bottom of the quilt top.
Step 8 - Sew a 2.5" square to each end of the remaining two strips. Press seams.
Step 9 - With right sides together, sew the side strips to the quilt top. Press seams to one side.
Step 10 - Repeat steps 6, 7 and 8 for the outer border.
Your quilt top is now complete.
Step 11 - Lay the backing, batting and quilt top and baste together. Quilt as desired.
Step 12 - Join binding strips, fold in half and iron. Sew binding around quilt.
