PLAID STARS QUILT
Level: Beginner
What you'll need:
- Main Fabric - 1.6m
- Blocks - A combination of 16 fabrics all 30cm in width
Finished Size
185 x 185 cm
Instructions
Step 1 - Before you cut! You will be cutting out 1 strip 5 inches wide and crosscutting 5 inch squares to make up 8 squares. With the next strip you will need to cut out 1 - 5 inch square first. Once you have cut your 5 inch square continue to cut 8 - 4 inch squares.
You will have:
- 8 - 5 x 5 inch squares
- 1 - 5 x 5 inch square
- 8 - 4 x 4 inch squares
Continue to cut all fabric.
Step 2 - With your 4 x 4 inch squares mark each one with a diagonal line across which will be your sewing line. It makes it much easier to mark all of these up first so you can concentrate on assembling each block.
Step 3 - Once all 4 x 4 inch squares are marked lay down your 5 inch square face up, place your first 4 x 4 inch square face down with your diagonal line facing in the right direction and sewing along the line. Trim to leaving a quarter inch seam and press the fabric back in place forming your first point. Repeat the process on the opposite side and you will have completed your first points for your block. Repeat this process 3 more times.
Step 4 - Once all of your points are assembled you can then put together your 9 squares to make up your block. Once sewn together your square should measure approximately 14 x 14 inch finished. Set aside and continue making all 16 blocks.
Step 5 - Once all blocks have been assembled it is time to add your 4 inch sashing strips to your blocks.
Step 6 - Begin by laying out your blocks in all the positions you would like them to appear. Sashing will need to be added to 3 right sides of the blocks - approximately 4 x 14 inches. Sew strip to block and then trim for a neat finish.
Step 7 - Sew these in Strips of 4
Step 8 - Once all strips have been pieced then add the additional sashing in between each strip and sew together until all blocks are pieces altogether.
Step 9 - Last Step is to add the sashing to the outer edges on all sides of the quilt.
Step 10 - Sandwich and quilt your quilt. When sandwiching your quilt always allow a good 10cm larger on each side of the quilt with your batting and backing fabric. Once quilted trim and bind.
